Prepping!!

You know, stocking rations, primitive survival, bunker building, escape plan/bugout bags, etc. Who's into it?

Thinking about dipping a toe into the prepping world. I'm a total newb though. Right now, I own a tent and have around 7 water bottles. I timed myself and was able to erect the tent in just over 11 minutes. Not too shabby!

 

What scenarios are you into?

EMP

Nuclear fallout

Global pandemic

Aliens/zombies (seriously, heard people are concerned about this)

Global warming

Mexicans taking over

Authoritarian government

Traditional war

 

I am leaning towards global warming with a nod to EMP burst. Any ideas on starter kits? Assuming I'll need some basics like guns and ammo. Is it better to build a fortified bunker and stock it with rations, or learn survival skills and live off the land? I don't like bugs, so I'm thinking bunker but not married to it.

 

I pride myself on general preparation, and this just seems like a blind spot for so many of us (me included).

What sort of tent do you have? I have both a tunnel design two pole tent and a 4 pole geodesic dome design. I prefer the lighter weight of the tunnel tent if I'm on the move and having to erect it and take it down quickly. However the geodesic dome design is more bomb proof in stormy, harsh weather conditions. Thinking of getting a bivvy shelter for when I really want to be mobile.

 

I can erect the tunnel tent in less than 5 minutes. Approx 7 minutes for the dome. I'm hoping to get that down to 2 minutes with a bivvy shelter.

 

Being from an island nation global warming and rising sea levels are my main concerns hence the tent. Not much use having a shelter if it's under water. Moving to higher ground and living off the land is my preferred option.

What would you guys keep as a weapon for zombies? I feel like a gun is the obvious answer, but eventually you'd run out of bullets. Plus all of the bullets aren't mobile and you'd have to move around eventually

 

I understand starting with a gun maybe. But i think you'd need a sword of some sort. A sword is very mobile.

 

I've talked to my wife about this. I think she is too nice for a zombie Apocalypse. She'd be trying to save people, trying to reason with the zombies. You can't reason with zombies.

 

I married her anyway. But often i think to myself, in the event of a zombie apocalypse, i have some decisions to make.

Seriously, if it was only me and the preppers left I'd just assume to be dead. Complete freaks. What a nightmare scenario that would be.

Being isolated by distance and oceans I'm less concerned about a zombie apocalypse as it's likely to start in mainland Europe or North America and unlikely to reach us across oceans. So aside from global warming and rising sea levels I'm more concernd about illegal, communist/socialist government. Which is what we've almost got already with a pregnant, godless prime minister expecting child out of wedlock and in partnership with the Greens. Also successive weak, left wing governments have run down our military to the point where we are defenceless if Russia or China sailed into Wellington harbour and the US navy was not there to help due to dealing with their own Zombie apocalypse. For that reason alone a stache of weapons and ammunition is essential to be prepared to resist.
