North Carolina State's PGM Program...any good?

I am looking into the best PGM program for my son (won't graduate until 2010) and I am liking NCSU. I wanted to get other's opinions out there. I like it because it is actually a BS in PGM with Business as a Minor versus most other PGM colleges being a BS in Business, Marketing, or Tourism with a concentration in PGM. My son is not AT ALL interested in business or marketing...just golf. Thanks for any advice. :shout:

excellent program.. had two freinds go threw and one still in now. great combo of schooling and hands on PGA work. have him pass the PAT first.. > get his golf game in check before you spend the dollars on the program. he has to pass it..

I work directly with the NCSU PGM program and they are moving in a great direction. I am the E.D. of the local The First Tee chapter in Raleigh. Their new director, Robb Wade, is a great guy and his newly hired assistant has years of Class A PGA experience. I have one of their top students as an intern and incoming freshman are required to volunteer with our program.

Also, they broke ground on the school's Palmer Designed golf course in June and having access to that facility on the Centennial Campus will be a huge plus for the program.

NCSU is a fine pgm program but PSU has the best pgm program in the country based on academics. Top ten business school, Number one turfgrass, top three recreation and hospitality management school. At psu, u get an bs in "rptm" but its all pgm stuff and a business minor in four years.

All of the PGM schools are great. i would visit a few of them and decided which is the best fit. If you wanna play golf year round certain schools are better then others which is why i am at UNLV.

I was in the engineering school at NC State and it was a great 4 years. And they're building a great facility there, but I'm not sure if it will be open in time for your son to enjoy it - although there are plenty of nice courses in Raleigh.

Methodist has the best PGM Program and the Director of the Program is the greatest.

First of all, he will not last in the golf industry if he is not into business at all. The main goal of any golf professional is to make moeny for his club or company. NC State has a good program, but Methodist has the best reputation within the business and is the most well connected. Along the lines of golf, Methodist has more PGA members on staff than any other PGM school. Finally, I would tell you to compare the curriculums of each school to that of NC State, you most likely will see little difference.

I am currently in the Sport Management Program at NC State and have a few classes with the PGM students. From what I hear, most of them hate how there are so many classes on turf management and all the science involved with it. But since I am not in the program, I do not have first hand experience.

BTW, the course will be open in Fall '08 for PGM and golf teams and Spring '09 for all other students.

If your son really isn't that academicly focused right now I'd steer away from any of the PGM programs and have him enroll in the SDGA - San Deigo Golf Academy. All the PGM programs are attached to universities with academic requirements. I've seen too many student ruin a college career by focusing too much on golf and not enough on classes. PGM is an add-on to an education, its not the focus of it.
