Looking for a little iron suggestion/help!

My son is 9 and we are in Northwest Florida were junior fitting is basically a trial and error situation. We don’t have any local fitters other than typical Edwin watts. He was playing US Kids 54” ultra lights up until this year and I may have jumped the gun by instead of buying a tour series set I built him a set of older AP1 irons with Swing Science graphite shafts and Flynn grips. While he hits some really good shots with them, I am not 100% sold on them being right for him. I don’t want to hinder him unless it would be worth it in the long run. He did have a bit of setback this year with his scoring but getting a late start following baseball did not help. We had a chance to get on a monitor yesterday and his 6 iron head speed was between 45-55 which is a broad range in my opinion. Driver is a TM Slider S 14* with Flynn shaft and his speed was pretty consistently 65. He has gotten to hitting it more consistently, without a lot of height. He is a 90lb 57” tall 9 year old so I thought maybe going to the AP1 he would be ok with head weight. Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions.

 

We have finished our local junior tour and he is going to transition into a fall US Kids local tour to keep playing and I want to give him the tools to succeed and if that means going back to a lighter us kids TS set of irons I am ok with that.

Your best option is probably the TS3 from US kids or talk to Mike at Flynn Golf and have him make you a set. 9 years old seems a little young for adult irons but based on your info, it seems like you have a big kid on your hands. Most kids start to transition into adult heads around 11-12 years old. I think in the last article I read on junior fitting, they mentioned adult heads being an option when your kid was 60”.

Yeah he is very much a tweener when it comes to getting a set. My concern is the weight. He’s a bigger kid for his age, at least in comparison to the other kids here, however I almost feel like they might be a bit much. I just hate buying a new set each year.

I'd get the SW checked as well as the lie angles. You need to find a jr. coach that is also good at fitting people to have a look at what you concocted. It's probably just swing mechanics are a bit off. It's rarely the equipments fault, but sometimes to heavy a SW with Jrs will create swing issues. I don't know what AP1 heads typically weigh out at, or what weight your graphite shafts are to really help. My son is 11 and 60" and is only just now capable of handling adult Forged heads, with 58g graphite shafts. Before that it was USK TS all the way.

I agree with most above but I'll add this. Flynn is great because he has 4 different weighted heads to try from. Two if you want to build your own set his heads on irons are only about $10 a club. Sounds like he not quite ready for adult but maybe a series 2b or 3 from flynn would be a good fit. You can use their shafts or an ladies flex in one if you feel like that is needed.

 

Another option would be look at companies that will customize the head weight like Ping for example can really get the head weight low however pretty much have to buy these new in order to really get this done correctly so not a cheap option.

 

I'm with you on buying a new set each year. We are on our 2nd set in under a year. She won't stop growing so fast. Almost 8 and she already 55" tall!!

Well I am going to look for a set of irons to try and see if they make a difference. He is now starting to work with an instructor so we will see if the combination gets him where he wants to Be.
