Using an Orange Whip to understand my (faulty) downswing tendencies

Recommended Posts

>This is the recipe for pulls.

I threw everyone off with my comment about pulls (which is a reminder to never post here about my swing).

I don't pull the ball—I push it, wipe it, thin it, and fat it.

To compensate for the fact my club face is open and the heel is down at/around my sagittal plane, I actively TRY to pull the ball, and this seems to fix my impact position to a point where I can play competitively and not get BTFO.

Also: if you have a flat af backswing, it's possible to be steeper on the downswing than on the backswing and STILL be under the plane from 9'o clock through impact (which is the portion of the downswing where I see what I'm calling shallowing; it is maybe just a reorientation out to the right and not "shallowing," but I have a feeling of my hands being "way under" at that point).

>Your left hand still pointing skyward...

Indeed! This is evidence of what I'm calling being under plane from too much shallowing.

I should probably use a different word here, because I now see people are too tied to "shallowing" referring to the one image of the club laying off at the top of the downswing.

In reality, shallowing can happen at any point. And if it's happening at the wrong time, it's obviously a compensation for something that happened before.

But you aren’t shallowing. That’s the point. Your club is actually steeper and hands are higher.

My delivery is still pretty flat.

And the downswing gets flatter as the hands drop. That's shallowing.

I am NOT using the term in the context of the backswing AT ALL.

Flatter delivery would mean shaft approaching from more along your right arm, your club is above your shoulder. You are not flat.

Whatever you may call it, your club never gets back down to the proper plane and you don’t release it properly. This is why you hit pulls and probably high push slices.

I mean, what do you want from this forum? You post a swing video with an orange whip where you are literally swinging inside on the backswing and have an over the top downswing. I'm only going off that first swing because everything else after that is momentum based and I doubt it reflects your actual golf swing. I've played with plenty of scratch + golfers and I was a +1.6 before quitting the game for 10 years and I think the first thing I would do is take that garbage swing aid and unceremoniously burn it in the nearest dumpster fire you can find. I'm not knocking your athletic ability whatsoever, because i bet you have some good hand eye coordination, but that training aid isn't doing you any favors. It looks like it is grooving an arm based swing wherein your right elbow is stuck behind your rib cage, you have no flex in your right knee because of your flat backswing/turn, which causes you to manipulate an over the top down swing in order to save yourself. If you want to "Hulk Smash" a driver then get rid of the inside "stuck" swing you are rocking, otherwise get used to scrambling for pars. I am interested to see how much your actual golf swing matches what we are seeing here. Just don't post up on here and get an attitude when everyone is telling you that you're over the top(which is why you're not going to hit a draw, you'll just hit pulls or weak shots to save a steep downswing).
