What are your swing thoughts during or just before the swing?

When I swing I think about the tempo, not rushing the shot, or pause at the backswing.

What are your swing thoughts during the swing? Do they vary upon the type of shot (chipping, pitching, putting, full shot, sand)?

SO many great swing thoughts, so lil' time.........hehehe..........let me say this, IMOP, the best are downswing related and involve something AGGRESSIVE THROUGH THE BALL OR something TARGET related..............the WORST sound like an Irishman deciphering Chinese............:) personally, I think, for most people, IMAGES are more worthwhile........

Its funny what both slice and caryk belive on swing thoughts on the backswing.

Not that I read Slice saying anything negative would happen.

The backswing takes say a two count the downswing a one. I have always felt it was easier to fix a swing in the backswing than the downswing

Therefore I like backswing swing thoughts besides they work for me.

One of my favorites is simply turn Ken turn or nice and slow Ken which usually helps me turn.

I agree with slice on the downswing thoughts , mine are usually let it go Ken

I think the backswing thoughts help me more

I think of "swing through it", acutally to be exact I say "get through it" and that's about it. Every swing, shot or even putt I just want to accelerate through the ball. I don't work on my swing on the course, I try to play golf so the swingthoughts for me are for the range. I've played a little better and enjoyed my rounds a lot more since doing so.

NOT exactly what I'm saying...........I think "backswing thoughts" are great........I AGREE with Mr. Burke, "you CAN think about the backswing, but, the downswing is a different animal, it happens too quickly"......(supposedly from Mr. Burke and I'm paraphrasing).......what I was referring to were the BEST "swing thoughts"..........hell, I probably played the majority of my golf with a backswing swing thought, but, I played my BEST golf with nothing more than a SIMPLE downswing thought or thinking of nothing but the target/shot shape/impact FEEL or "visualization".........but downswing swing keys are "inputted" BEFORE you take the club back and NOT during the swing........hell, all swing keys should be "inputted" BEFORE you take the club back..........and ONE key per swing.........hehehehe

One of the GC commentators said that Steve Williams told them that after the British Open Tiger got deep into "mental imaging" with his swing. He said that in his 10 years with Tiger he has never seem him hit the ball better.

VISUALIZATION is HUGE..........at least once you have a fundamentally sound golf swing...........you "own" a golf swing like most on your local range and all the visualization in the world won't matter.......:) hehehe..........btw, I think that most good players, when they play their absolute best, are using "images"/"visualizations" rather than a mechanically based "swing key".........

When I'm hitting it bad: I think of one thing, and one thing only that I'm working on - and it is a backswing thought, because I believe if its bad, I can set myself up for a good downswing through a good backswing.

When I know my swing is good:

Driver - focus on ballshape,
Irons - find a target behind the part of the green I'm aiming at (tree, post watever) and have that in my head. I know the club is the right distance and if I need to hit a draw or fade, my stance dictates that so I don't need over-excessive or any more movements in my swing.
Pitches and chips - I pick an exact target on the green, or wherever, and aim for that spot.
Putting - "This is in the hole"

Me hitting good shots take the whole routine.

Alignment most important... find my lines (target, intermmediate target, and feet parallel)and my shot (straight, draw, or cut).

practice swing and some waggles. I say (swing) back swing (bata bata) full turn pause at top (Swiiinnng) to emphasize the acceleration. I cant do the numbers thing so I do my own as well.

My mental image is me beating a carpet on a fence. I saw this on TGC by someone (maybe gary player) and it just stuck. I think the clubface of my driver is the palm of my hand. And just make sure I get the whole palm not part of it.

Finally I try to remember to finish high, not always the case, but working that so I can get my beltbuckle to the target.

word to your mother. "flat wrist" is my swing thought. As long as I don't bow my left wrist on my takeaway and get to flat the rest takes cars of itself. However, let it get to far inside and it's lights out.
