Looking for a new driver

I picked up a retail G2 on a whim as they are so cheap. Mine sits 0.5* open. The G2 is supposedly also neutrally weighted. I haven't had much time to play around with it, but it looks like it might knock the 983K out of the bag.

I have tried Launcher 460's, Comps, Ignite 460's, the 454, and the 905T, and every one of them looked a little closed to one degree or another (the 454 was damn near 2* closed). The G2 looks like a driver that doesn't want to go left. Exactly what I am looking for.

I have heard rumors that the G5 addresses the concerns of many of the G2 owners (namely that they sliced it or had a pretty good fade), so the G2 (if this is true) would be even better suited for a hooker than a G5. When you look at the prices they are going for used (mine looks like it hit maybe 10 balls, and I got it for $125 via eBay) it's a very easy decision.

Cally claims that the 8*, 9*, 10* and 11* models of the BB 454 are square faced:

Perhaps the particular club you had was manufactured out of spec, or maybe the mfg tolerances are just that loose?

Just had a Tour Edge Exotics Driver delivered today to my door. Hit it in 30* weather, with 30+ MPH wind and WOW. Obviously, the shaft makes all the difference but look out for this one come spring. This is for real.

Jim,

Was it the 9* club? I've heard that the 9* (listed at 1* open) looks slightly closed. Thus, I would expect that the 8* (listed at 2* open) looks square to slightly open.

Did you find this to be true? Did you get a good sense of the launch qualities despite the bad weather? Did you find the face to be like the fairways (i.e. imo Titleist-like with noticeable curvature vis-a-vis TM with a flat face)? Any idea on the head weight, hosel bore depth, or what shaft you are going to try?

What happened to your Exotics fairway wood?

Okay...here's the skinny.

The driver is frickin' awesome. I had it sent with an Aldila 65X NV; ONLY because it was the only X flex they had. I had them send me an 8* head and hand pick and open one. Yes, it's is very square to slightly open but not 2*. Interestingly, I have their literature for '06 and the specs are slightly different from the website. In the lit, they claim the 8* is 1* open, the 9* is square and the 10* is 1* closed. The 8* is perfect for me. Set up is REAL good.

So, here's what I did. I hit a handful of balls with the NV still in it and I gotta tell ya, the whole face is a frickin' sweet spot. Next, no matter where on the face you hit it, it goes DEAD STRAIGHT. Now, the tinkerer that I am, I decided, what the hell, and I yanked the shaft and threw in a FUJI SIX Tour Spec and holy sh!t, the thing has to be illegal. The ball explodes off the clubface and is so far gone, so quick, it's crazy. Believe me, this is not the typical Todd at BSG / TM new driver release bullxxxx, lie, hype, always being another 15 - 20 yards longer. This thing is simply ridiculous. Hell, you guys be the judge yourselves. The best part is....with the SIX, I raise the flight slightly and reduced the overall weight so that I could load the toe with lead tape and produce a HIFADE machine.

I'm tellin' ya, it's good. If people give this bad boy a chance, this driver, as a tremendous follow up to the already great Exotics FW's, will raise Tour Edge to the next level. I believe it's that good. Hell, if I didn't have my own company, I'd beg them for a job....I believe in it that much.

Now, to answer your question on the 3 wood.....McCord gave me a tour r7 FW and I love it. I can't hit it as far as my Exotics but I just love the look. I'll never give up the 15* Exotics though, it's just shaftless right now.

The face on the driver is a flatter TM look. The hosel is very short but the bore is deep...almost blind. The head size is disguised well but has a great look. The headweight was in the 204 gram range. Head a impact is solid, slightly muted but not too hollow sounding.

I'm sticking with it for now and it's frickin' winter here. Can't wait for a warm day or gettin' down to Orlando for the PGA Show when I can get to hit it outdoors and really give it a workout. One last thing, this club feels like I can swing as hard as I want and still not worry about the left side.

More to come........

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
