Really bad pull hook, need help! (8hcp)

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I’ve been working on adding power and making better contact this season, getting back to where I was in my early 20’s. It’s working, but my pulls and pull hook misses are really showing through, especially on my woods, and very especially with my driver. It’s not like a dead pull left, but it’s left of center and then the hook keeps taking it, and it shows up at just before apex with my driver. I was running out of balls at the end when I decided to film so I didn’t get a side shot, but just looking for anything that can help.

Hey Chappie,

I am a better than scratch golfer and freelance golf coach. You are not really pulling the shot in regards to the start line and your shoulders. Your shoulders are way open at address and the ball is actually starting right of your shoulders at address. My shoulders typically get too open at address when the ball is too far forward in my stance.

Tip 1: get your shoulders more square at address and confirm that the ball is some around the inside of your front foot.

Tip 2: ***only after implementing Tip 1... Your not really making a full shoulder turn, instead you are bending your left arm excessively to create the feel of making a full backswing. As a result, you shoulders return to open too quickly in the downswing and your left arm continues to have too much bend at impact which can result in a shut club face. How to make a full shoulder turn (especially with reduced flexibility due to age) : set up in your golf posture without and club....while keep your head still feel like your pulling your right shoulder up and back to be behind where your left ear is at address. Also, you restrict your hip turn pretty significantly reducing the depth of your shoulder turn. I would let those hips turn away from the target pretty generously on the backswing (add power and reduce injury).

Hope that helps and feel free to DM me for free tips whenever.

Best,

Colton

I agree with all of the above... I'd check ball position and also your grip. If your right hand's too "strong" (on top of the club), that'll get your shoulders open too much. I think that's happening, because you have a pretty open club face at the top.

How to film your golf swing:

Really nice strike. Your shoulders appear aimed left of your feet. Path follows shoulders so maybe just a very slight power leak ? Looks pretty good though. Is the ball in the video hooking ? It appears fairly straight.

Nevertheless, maybe just a bit of an alignment issue and possibly just a very slightly too strong grip ? Baby steps, yes ?

My club face is actually in a pretty good spot up top, I think this video may be at a slightly hard angle to relay that though. Here is another one taken a few balls earlier from a slightly different spot (the guy who I had record me is relatively new golfer and not too intuitive with the camera, as it turns out)

@nsxguy I'll have a look next time I'm at the range, I didn't feel like my shoulders were inside or outside my target line but maybe. The ball did tail off left pretty much after it disappeared, but this was about my straightest shot with my driver all night.
My mindset was perhaps this had more to do with more of my hips not completely turning or my hands catching up to my hips, but I may be overthinking it.

Forgot about this.

Lines aren't exact of course but you appear to be a fair bit "across the line" at the top.

Usually(?) this leads to a path that's too far to the inside thereby promoting a path too in-to-out, causing a right-to-left ball flight.

The opposite, having the club "laid off" (e.g. if your shat was pointing at the tall post), typically promotes throwing the club out and "over the top", causing an out-to-in path and a left-to-right ball flight.
