Closed at the top

Hi all, 

 

I've finally got my hands on a golf net here in 'Lockdown UK' and now that the weather has slightly improved I'm able to get out and swing in the garden. Looks like no golf for a while so it give me time to work on my backswing.

 

Despite playing off 6 my swing isn't pretty and I've noticed a couple of obvious faults

 

1. closed clubface at the top and 

2. slightly over the top on the way down

 

I've tried to solve the shut clubface at the top but I just cant seem to get it right, from the slo-mo I've got it seems like the weight of the club is behind my hands resulting the butt of the club pointing outside the target line, are there any drills that help with this?

 

I don think I can solve 2 without nailing 1 first

A closed face at the top is not a fault.    Plenty of good players with closed face, just one example is DJ.

I totally get that and I’d probably accept that if my wrist position was the same as DJ’s 😀

 

I’d like to get something squarer

Why?    Closed at top isn’t reallly closed just less open.  Advantage is you have have less to close the face before impact so not as much motorcycle move required.

 

 But no one is going to be able to offer any usable advice without seeing the swing.

I should have added my left wrist is cupped at address so I guess I struggle to keep the angle to the top. 
 

Had a swingyde years ago but lost it in a house move

Face  not an issue.   If anything you need to extend the trail wrist more in the backswing.    That and you pull down and bring the com of the club out early versus getting it behind you, ie shallowing.        Check out the thread on Monte’s NTC.

First order is to get the arms/wrists moving in a better direction to shallow the club - will lead to better ball striking.    However your takeaway may make that difficult, may.    In that case you’d need to improve it .   sooner or later you’ll need to address it.      
 

the thread has lots of information - monte sells the video for $27 off his website.    He also has a couple of Instagram clips  where he took q&a and they run over an hour together.

Would I be correct in assuming you’re working from home and spending hours at a desk? You’re hunched/slouched and just look stiff.
 

I’d address your posture firstly as you’re too close to the ball which would probably self correct through posture getting sorted. 

 

You get inside/under plane early and your hands come out meaning from the top you have no choice but to steeper the shaft and get narrow. 
 

@MonteScheinblum’s NTC would be my go to as the normal ‘prescribed’ long routes will make you hate the game through the process! The long routes mean you learn to hit every bad shot you can think of in the journey to correcting all your compensating faults. Not being a tool but I’ve been there myself and took the long route. I nearly quit playing altogether! I use NTC (when I’m not under house arrest) to keep myself on the rails. 
 

if you’ve got Hudl Technique you can put lines on videos and see what I mean. I’d even try some online lessons with Monte as you have the facility to hit balls.

Yep been working from home for 11 months now, not been to the gym since the summer and unable to play football. 
 

Struggled with the takeaway all my golfing life. Got to the point where I’ve kind of accepted it will never change regardless of what I try
