Trevor Immelman - Recovery

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd share this as I'm sure everyone at GolfWRX wishes Trevor a speedy recovery.... Some of this info is common knowledge, and some comes from a good friend who I will not name and who has met Trevor recently.

After Trevor won the Nedbank Million Dollar he had to pull out of the South African Open because he was struggling with breathing because of pain across his rib cage.

During the operation a golf ball sized growth was found on his diaphragm not on his rib as first thought. It was sucessfully removed and he is now on his way to recovery. It looks like he will be out of the game for up to 12 months....

Trevor is a great player who has the game to win a major in the future and I'm sure he'll be back to full fitness and action for the start of the 2009 season.

I'm surprised this went largely ignored in the news, it's been almost a month and this is the first I've heard of it.

That's really terrible. He was really beginning to pick up some momentum again for 2008. Hopefully he will have a quicker than expected recovery.
Immelman faces up to two months of rehab after surgery on his diaphragm
Tests revealed a lesion on Trevor Immelman's diaphragm, reported to be about the size of a golf ball, and it was removed.

12.19.2007 12:39 pm (ET)

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (PA) -- Trevor Immelman faces up to two months out of action after undergoing surgery to remove a growth on his diaphragm.

The world No. 19 was forced out of last week's South African Airways Open at Pearl Valley Golf Estates complaining of severe pain and discomfort across his ribcage. Subsequent tests revealed a lesion on his diaphragm, reported to be about the size of a golf ball.

The 28-year-old went under the knife on Tuesday and had the growth successfully removed. He is expected to be out for between four and eight weeks as he bids to regain full fitness.

The layoff will come as a real blow for the South African, who was in good form having won the Nedbank Challenge at Sun City earlier in the month.

Immelman has won four times on the European Tour in total and once on the PGA TOUR. He also has also played for the International team in the last two Presidents Cup matches.
The lay-off time is looking to be longer than first expected (8 weeks) and could be up to the entire 2008 season, he has lost a lot of weight.

Trevor is such a nice guy and 2008 was looking to be a good potential major winning year for him, hopefully he can get back in the gym soon and start building back up.

What a shame, Immelman seems to be a really good guy as well as a great player. Hard to believe one person in such great shape can have so much bad luck with his health. He has really been dealt a bad hand the past couple of years. Heres hoping for a speedy recovery!

 • 2 weeks later...

An article in a Phoenix area paper from last Wednesday (1/16) says that he committed to play at the FBR Open the last week of January/first week of February. Something either changed in a huge positive way or thankfully your source was wrong on the recovery time. Either way it is good to hear he is apparently doing better.
I was hitting balls at Lake Nona on Monday- he was standing next to me on the range and working with his instructor- he looked in good health and seemed to be hitting it great. Was very friendly and was talking with everyone that approached him.
That's fantastic to hear..... he was real 'skin and bones' after the operation and was only allowed back into the gym after the new year, I'm glad the recovery has happened much quicker than previously thought...hopefully there's no ill effects and he can get 'match fit' over the next few weeks and continue on the great form he had before the operation....
