Fixed my grip, been working very hard, would like feedback

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, Been on golfwrx off an on since around 2004, this spring I've worked hard at the range, 3 x a week since April. I have worked on a few things the last few weeks and this week I feel I had a breakthrough with a new grip (left hand) adjustment. I'm 52, been playing for 40 years now, for many years when I was in my late 20s - to late 30s I played to about a 4.5 index. I think I can get back to a 4 or lower soon.  I'd like some feedback.  I've always had a natural flat swing. Lately I'm working on better rotation thru the ball, especially with irons. Let me know what you see, like, dislike, etc. Thanks. ! 1st video is a 4 iron, 2nd my driver.

Great swing! You've got some solid looking fundamentals and some pop too. I see no reason why you couldn't meet your goals with a swing like that, nothing jumps out as being obviously problematic to me.

Can you share a couple extra details? Specifically what your miss tends to be, what you changed about your grip, and how you feel it helped. Otherwise at 52 with a swing like that I would just be focused more on fitness and strength/flexibility work in your core and legs to maintain that aggressiveness through the ball. 👍

Thanks for your reply.. My misses with my driver tend to be pushes to the right. I will also hit the occasional pull, but rarely would I hit a bad duck hook..  My left hand has always looked and been a little strong , since I was a kid.. Kinda like Azinger, John Daly, Freddie, ect.  I struggle alot with long irons, sometimes I fear coming hard through the ball with an iron shot, it I'll hit it solid but will hook it left. What I just did was wrap my index finger on my left hand more around the shaft more, which weakened it , I'm now able to grip it better with my right hand this way too. lately with irons at the range, I'm really pure-ing iron shots dead straight now, with occasional fades when I want to. This is all new to me !  I feel I can go hard through it now without hitting pulls.  I also agree about conditioning and this spring have got into a regular exercise routing, focusing on core.  I also bike alot... Flexibility is key

That sounds pretty similar to something I did recently as well, part of why I asked. I idolized Freddy as a kid and definitely struggled with a similar tendency with my left hand. You end up getting stuck between releasing the club and holding it off, which it sounds like you might have been doing with the pushes to the right and pulls to the left. You drop down nicely inside and a grip that is a little too strong can cause you to get flippy with the release.

I would definitely spend time on the range to get comfortable with the grip change to make sure it is nice and ingrained so it will translate to the course. Other than that I see nothing worth changing!
