vsteel vs. r5 3 Wood

Greetings all. My brother has asked for a new Taylor Made 3 wood for Christmas, and the vsteel and r5 look to be in my price range. I play a vsteel myself and I'm very happy with it. I am wondering about the r5, though. Has anyone out there hit both of these fairway woods? How do they compare? Thank you much, and happy holidays.

V Steel for sure. The r5 doesn't hold a candle to that V Steel!

Keith, both are two excellent clubs, but quite different.

The V-Steel is much better for tight lies and easier to work with a more penetrating ball flight. The R5 is more forgiving and longer, but not very suitable - due to the fact it has a larger head - to be played from difficult lies or from the rough.

r5 is longer than the vsteel (by 20 yards for me), and is way more forgiving. The vsteel is more workable and has a lower trajectory. The stock shaft on both stink, so a good reshaft is in order. The r5 needs to be modified to have removable weights to realy come alive (easily done).

If distance is needed get the r5, if you need workability the vsteel is the ticket, but a good combo of both is the r7.

It depends on what you are primarily using the club for - the V steel is much better off the fairway, but the R5 is great off the tee. The flight of the R5 is much higher, which is probably due to the titanium head, and it is much longer.

I imagine the V steel 2 has a higher flight than the old one due to the shallower head, but haven't tried it yet. The 5 wood comparison bears out my theory though.

Have used both but fancy the R7 fairway as they look a good compromise between the R5 and V Steel.

Happy Hunting!

Have used both before. I'm back with the V steel, the R5 was way to light for me. I could not feel the head in the golf swing like my V Steel. Had a much different sound to it also.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
