Summer tournaments

Recommended Posts

For most of us Summer tournament season is coming to an end.

For us this summer was much better then last year and was much more productive. I am sure that is the case for most of us.

Personally we are seeing hard work pay off and racking up some hardware was nice.

Two things I take away from this summer are:

I learned that as we move into older groups those kids who work at it and have skills needed to play harder courses are the ones winning. In a lot cases they are not the same kids who have been winning when they are younger.

Kids also police themselves a lot more as they get older. Some kids have a real bad reputation and in some cases it travels far. Also kids who like golf tend to like each other and have a lot in common.

Not sure how everyone else’s summer has been.

My 17 YO had a great summer this year.  Won a few times and played well in some Men's level tournaments.  Interesting you note how some kids keep getting better while some who were good when younger don't get much better.   Happens in every sport.  Want them on the path of continual improvement.  Was a kid, great kid too, at 12 would be the crap out of everyone.  Now, at 17, he can't compete as well because he can't hit it far enough.  My son kept getting better and can hit it a long way and worked hard on his wedges.  Why he is now winning more.  Golf is tough and very competitive.  Winning is great but top 10 finishes in the bigger Jr tournaments goes a long way toward college recruiting.  Tournament scoring average is what most college coaches look at closely.  Son got his down from 78 two years ago to 71.3 this year.  Made a difference.

Yes, was speaking to a coach and he said his dream player had a 68 tournament scoring average, good grades and didn't need any scholarship money.  🤣

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Typically, D-1 schools know who they are going to sign when the kids are juniors in high schools.  They are the exceptional few players.  Doesn't mean other kids can't play D-1 at some point just have to take a different path.  This is my kid.  Been advised to go to a smaller school, play great, make grades and after a season or two enter the transfer portal and several D-1 schools will take him.  Most D-1 schools only have 3 golf scholarships at most to give.  Covid screwed that all up with the additional year allowed.  Fortunately, several D-1 players go pro before they finish their eligibility freeing up a scholarship.

You're right about the dream player.  Far and few between too!
