Standard CUT Iron Shaft Lengths

I am in the process of building a set of clubs for myself for the first time ever. I intend on using 2011 TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC's as the 5-PW and a Srixon ZX 23° Utility as the 4 iron. All 7 clubs are going to have Tour Issue Dynamic Gold X100's in them and I am wondering what the CUT shaft lengths should be. I play my clubs above standard length but I want to get a point of reference so I know how much I need to cut by in case the people who previously built my clubs were off by an 1/8 of an inch or whatever. Prior to me building these myself I played them 1.5" inches above standard and the raw CUT shaft measurements are as follows:

 

4 iron: 38 6/8"

5 iron: 38 1/8"

6 iron: 37 5/8"

7 iron: 37 1/8"

8 iron: 36 5/8"

9 iron: 36 1/8"

Pitching Wedge: 35 6/8"

 

Based on my own individual research, it seems like a 1/2" (4/8") gap between shafts is a good rule of thumb when building. Does this mean that the 4 iron and Pitching Wedge are 1/8" too long to begin with? Also, if for the new set I want to play the clubs at .75" over standard, should I cut 1/8" off the 4 iron and PW then cut an additional .75" off of every shaft? Please let me know and thanks for your help

Dry fit shaft into hosel, lay club on proper club length ruler, measure length and adjust as needed by butt trimming (assuming your shafts are long enough)

 

There are different ways to measure: using 60 degree sole angle tool, etc, and length can be measured to the end of the grip cap or end of the shaft.  In other words, there is no standard so pick a method and go.

Well, many use 1/4" between the 9i and PW as well as 1/2" (to keep the wedges from getting too short since the addition of the gap wedge became common) but other than that yes, 1/2" is by far the most common length increment.   But more than likely that's why the PW is a little longer.

 

 

There are exceptions (which is why you always need to measure it out) but cut shaft length to playing length for irons will typically be found by adding between 1" to 1.5" to the cut shaft length and then another 1/8" for the grip cap.  So those cut shaft length means somewhere between 1-1/4" to 1-3/4" over 'standard'.

 

FYI there are more than just one standard for the stock playing lengths so when building clubs, you should always think of your playing length in terms of the absolute lengths - not a relative change.   e.g.  think in terms of a 38-3/4" 5i  not just in terms of +3/4" over length.     That could mean anything from a 38.5" 5i to a 39" 5i depending on who's standard you're working with.
