Working on vertical backswing, clubface wide open.

I’ve started working on my swing more seriously but I’m really at my wits end. I was coming over the top  because I was taking the club too much inside on the backswing. Now, I’m trying to groove a more vertical backswing and a shallower downswing but the face is wide open at impact. Should I work on the “motorcycle move” (flexing the lead wrist and extending the trail one) or is there another solution?

 

When ball is there I’m unable to replicate this swing (it’s not functional because I would be shanking the hell out of it. My "muscle memory" tries to save the day and I’m  throwing and flipping my hands at it in order to square the club face 😤

Getting from p6 to impact is a combination of forearm rotation, wrist unhinging (ulnar deviation), and for irons where AoA should be negative, forward shaft lean, which requires left wrist flexion/right wrist extension. It’s hard to tell without a slow mo vid, but from the pic it looks like you’re not getting enough forearm rotation and not enough left wrist bowing. If you’re saying you can’t seem to keep your left wrist bowed in a live ball swing, you can try just bowing your wrist from the top of your backswing a la DJ.

You'll have to post some actual shots because if as you say you can't replicate any of this with a ball then attempting to comment on it's mechanics isn't terribly useful. What I can see though that is worth mentioning is a grip issue and a path issue, at least from an intent standpoint. 



You've got the dreaded long right thumb thing going on where your thumb is running straight down the shaft instead of being linked up with your right thumb. While maybe not directly responsible for your issues, it is likely contributing. It's a weak connection from a biomechanical standpoint and makes releasing the right hand harder, which can lead to open club face issues. 



Your position is like the right when you went the thumb crossing over and more closely opposing your index finger like on the left. Make that change first to see if that helps with face control a bit. 

As for the practice swings, you're swinging way from the inside and out to right field which is common incorrect reaction/overcompensation when trying to move away from an over the top move. Beyond that we'd need to see how you're actually hitting balls though. Don't worry that you can't swing like this when doing so however, you really wouldn't want to anyway.
