Help with custom wedge ordering decision

Recommended Posts

Got my new fitted P790's (finally) 4 thru A.  A is 50 deg, and I have a Vokey SM8 56.08 M.  Didn't add club number 14, because I wanted to see what I needed the most.

I am lacking a 110-120 yard full swing club.  I love my Vokey 56 from 100 yds in, and considering the SM9 F Grind with the 8 deg bounce.  Just by the math I am assuming I need a 53 degree.

Well Vokey has a 52 and 54 lofts.  I know what to order on lie and length, but do I want to increase the loft on a 52, or decrease a 54?  I assume the bounce impacted by this.  I am not as versed on bounce, but I hit my 56.08 well on a full swing.  I know I am grossly overthinking this, but that's what we do, right?   Opinions needed...

As far as I'm aware, it's also important to think about the offset. If you weaken a wedge, 52 to 53, you would decrease the offset (less offset). However, taking a 54 to a 53 would increase your offset. I would recommend choosing based on that first, and then regarding bounce next if that makes sense. (Based on whether you're going up or down and affecting bounce, potentially choose a different bounce and then have them meet in the middle).

Hope this helps,

David

Your challenge here may be that the P790 loft vs. distance progression isn’t equal to a Vokey. It’s likely that in terms of gapping, the required Vokey loft may be very close to the P790 A wedge. If that’s the case, your best approach (excuse pun) is to go with the 52 degree Vokey, and bend from there depending on the yardage you see from the two clubs.

In terms of bounce, 1 degree isn’t likely to be discernible.

Thanks guys.  I just seem to find myself in that tweener spot of 110-120 a lot. Probably 3x today, and cranking on the 56 is not the way to go.
I think I’ll go with the 52. Hit it for a while, and see what I get out of it, then make a bend decision.

Love it. Sounds like a good idea to me. Also do not recommend cranking on a wedge. I can hit my 50 degree around 115 to 120 but don't usually play it longer than 105 to 110. Just a thought.

Best of luck!!

Don't forget that when you bend a club for loft, you also change the bounce by the same amount.  Weaken it by 1* and you add 1* of bounce.  Strengthen it by 1* and you remove 1* of bounce.

Something to consider is that at the same loft, a P790 will hit the ball farther than a Vokey wedge due to it's hollow cavity design.  Forget about degrees and instead demo the wedges and pick the Vokey that goes the right distance, which might even be a 50* Vokey.  If you fall in between, consider the impacts of bending 1*, which isn't that much TBH.
