Does anybody else have to deal with and manage these on a regular basis?

 

I am a 14001 lead auditor, certified IATF 16949 auditor and now have responsibility for a site's 14001 and 50001 management systems.

 

If you do have responsibility, are you finding that your registration auditors are not very good compared to those who were in the business 5-10 years ago?  I am having the darndest time with one that has a complete lack of understanding for root cause and RCCA and is expecting me to go back and re-create missing inspection documents that were the responsibility of a previous regime.  My stance is A) that is dishonest and B) not productive.  Instead I have instituted the better use of an existing software platform to add visibility to more layers of the organisation and allow them to see when these compliance obligations are not being completed prior to their completion date.

The auditors have definitely gotten worse.  Most good auditors that have I worked with have been retiring over the last few years.

 

 

Quick Note:  Your CB is a 'Supplier' and you should be managing them just like any other supplier.  You need to be approving that CB for continued use.  You should be vetting the auditors that come onto your site and approving only those deemed competent.  If you have someone as you described, you need to provide feedback to the CB directly and ask that the auditor never return.

 

The business is competitive, you have the advantage and you need to manage it accordingly.

On this particular auditor it is not actually my system they were auditing but a part of our organization that relied upon pieces of my EMS through special conditions called out in their system.  I made the argument very early on that what the auditor wanted to see was out of scope.  I implored those responsible for their system to write us out of scope and address this with the auditor but they don't have the experience to successfully have done that.  And here I am responsible for two corrective actions for a system I don't even have responsibility for.  

 

It was actually R&D which is a separate business unit from manufacturing but housed within the same building.  I told them to make sure they were steadfast that anything outside of their purview was out of scope.  They failed that.  I knew we had systemic issues as the previous management team neglected the system and lost their cert.  It is on my list to regain but my marching orders are that it is not currently my top priority.  So resources...
