Anser 2 beni

My father had an old Ping Anser 2 that he wasn’t using and I’ve always liked the looks of it so he gave it to me. 
 

I assumed it was stainless steel as the alignment line, name and Pingman logo on the face are all black (it’s not been repainted). 
 

A magnet sticks to it so it’s definitely beni.  
 

He had cut the shaft down so I replaced it with another (what a PITA getting that shaft out with the ball bearing — freezing, drilling underneath and hammering and using a Dremmel to get that stupid ball bearing out). 
 

A 10-gram weight down an old Vokey shaft makes the putter feel very nice now.  
 

I’ve done a lot of searching and by far the vast majority of Anser 2 beni putters have white paint (with Ansers having gold as far as I can tell).   
 

Not that it makes a difference, but I assume this is from the mid to late 90s?   It has a Pat #.

I should also add that a few years ago I recall coming across a thread (probably here) about Ping putters and there was a link to a page or PDF file that someone had created about most models with the years available and materials used. 
 

It might even have been a book by someone. 
 

Anybody recall?   I can’t find it online.

I believe they image you show is a stainless steel Anser 2. Ping re-introduced some stainless steel models around 2005 or so with black paint. ( don't quote me on exact date ).

 

I should mention Nickel models were introduced around 1996 at the same time the ISI Nickel Irons came out.

 

The Nickel models all had gold paint and the finish on the nickel was lighter than the images you have provided. Here's an image of a Nickel Anser 2

I also originally thought it was a SS putter but a magnet sticks to it (my understanding is that SS isn’t magnetic — and it won’t stick to my SC that is stainless steel).     
 

It’s just more of a curiosity thing as opposed to really caring what’s it’s made of — the putter feels as great to me as my old carbon Santa Fe that I use.

Magnetism of stainless steel is based on the composition of the steel. Some stainless is and some isn't as they aren't all made the same.

 

Quick google search will explain this a lot better than I can.

I did do some searching but from what I read it seemed to be that SS putters weren’t magnetic — granted I didn’t spend more than about 15 min reading various posts.   
 

Irregardless, I’m quite happy with how the putter feels and rolls whether it’s made of SS, BeNi or a cream puff wrapped in tin foil.  Lol.

The Anser 2 BeNI all had gold paint filler. But they did come In 2 finishes, the tumbled original and a later blasted/misted finish, they were also slightly heavier than their SS versions, additionally they feel softer, more dense than SS (subjective Opinion).

I too think this looks more like an SS Anser 2

17-4 stainless steel is most definitely magnetic, almost all 400 series casting grades of stainless steel are magnetic

If it is weakly magnetic it is probably stainless steel. If it is strongly magnetic it is probably beni.
