Northwestern Weiskopf irons??

Not trying to be a club snob but did Northwestern ever make a desirable club? Are these anything? These have a decent look to them. These are on local CL for cheap with matching woods and wondering if they are worth while. I had a interesting run in with Mr Weiskopf in the early 90’s at a local course he was designing at that time.

If they’re cheap enough, they’re forged irons and look fine to my eyes. I’d give them a couple rounds of play.

I've seen lots of Northwestern clubs in my part of Canada but they pretty much always seem to look department store line to me.  Yours look quite nice.

Did Northwestern make any decent clubs?

 

I'd buy these in a flash if I saw a full set. Who knew there were two completely different sets of TW276? And that TW could stand for Tom Weiskopf?

I've got a story. Not sure I'd call it a run in. 

 

1978 US Open practice round, on the 17th tee. He's waiting to hit, group ahead was maybe 100 yards off the tee. Hadn't even pulled his driver yet. Dude standing next to me rattled his car keys. Weiskopf turned and shot him a look of daggers for several seconds.

I guess ‘interesting’ is subjective on my story but I’ll never forget it. Early-ish 90’s a friend is working at the local Weiskopf designed course as it’s being grown in. I’m stopping bye for lunch or something with my friend and I’m waiting for him cuz he’s still out somewhere. The course is still under construction at this time so I’m alone waiting in this more or less construction receiving area admiring the pallets of valve’s, sprinklers and irrigation stuff to be used on the course. Anyways 2 Suburban trucks pull up about 75 yards on other side of this area and 3-4 guys get out each of the vehicle’s. The others just went about what ever they were there to do, but the tallest of them makes a b-line straight towards me the moment he stepped out of the vehicle. I instantly recognized it was Mr Weiskopf as he was walking straight at me, gets up close and says “who are you and why are you here”? Needless to say he’s a very tall, large man and he’s also a very serious man or at least was that day. I did end up extricating myself from the situation decently and don’t believe I got my friend in too much trouble cuz he did work the entire summer there. Guess In reality I was somewhere I probably shouldn’t have been but sure was interesting how Mr. Weiskopf instantly, naturally went into a guard dog mode.

Hah!  These just popped up on my local FM marketplace.

 

Same 1,3,5 laminate woods. 3-pw irons as you shared, just Hubie Green on the back instead of Tom Weiskopf.

 

If they're still available next week when I get home, there will be some negotiations done.  🙂 They look playable!

Kinda looks like a 'bullet wound' on the face of the 8i of those Hubie Green NW's!? 

Maybe somebody had to be convinced...to pay up? If that is a GSW, the backstory must be interesting.

I've seen some similar Hubert Green irons listed. Northwestern stuff is almost always cheap around here. I've got three of their Shotsaver 1-irons. Nice clubs, opt for the older ones (in spite of being smaller) if you can find one in the first place.

There does appear to be a couple lines of Northwestern stuff that's nicer than the rest. I believe some of the Thunderbird irons were, but I haven't run into any of those yet.

The TW276 irons were an excellent iron.  I tried to buy a set from the Northwestern rep.  He said “are you a pro”?  Needless to say I didn’t get a set of the irons.

Speaking of the TW276 - if you were to look up "TW276 irons" on eBay right now you'd come across two Bullet branded irons that look identical to the Northwestern one, other than being stamped "FORGED" next to the TW276. Have to wonder if they were a foundry/open model.

Maltby's guide has a very interesting write on Northwestern's history...like someone mentioned above, I thought that they made retail only - I sure was wrong, after reading that lead-in to the Northwestern Golf Co in Maltby's...

I grew uparound Chicago soI saw a lot of Northwestern clubs growing up. I found a set odthe TW's. but just picked up the P wedge, becasue I dont need another set. I play it with some other sets I'm missing a wedge for and it plays pretty well TBH
