Did the profile of the ProV1x change at some point?

I'm 54 and old enough to remember when the original ProV1 was released. Then a few years later came the ProV1x.

My recollection has always been that the "x" model was originally designed to be a little firmer with less spin and was aimed at players with high swing speeds who might over-spin the ProV1.

Lately I've heard several people refer to the "x" model as the more spinny of the two balls. One friend said he thought the profile of the "x" ball was changed at some point along the way.

Am I misremembering the facts or did the ProV1x go through an identity crisis somewhere along the way?

Yes, the Pro V1 and Pro V1X switched back a few generations ago. The Pro V1X has more spin and is firmer than the Pro V

I believe the spin/trajectory characteristic swap started with the 2017 versions. Keep in mind that the differences in spin are not as drastic as the qualitative descriptors would imply.

From what I recall, the reason for the switch was due to tour feedback. Titleist previously had a tour only prototype called the ProV1x+ (standing for plus trajectory, basically a different dimple pattern for a higher peak apex) that was more popular on tour than the retail version so they went with that approach for retail in 2017.

I can no longer locate the JPG file but I have a picture somewhere of a 2013 Pro V1x box on the back where it shows the little comparison between Pro V1 and Pro V1x. I am absolutely certain it said iron spin was "High" for Pro V1 and "Higher" or Pro V1x. And that was two generations before the so-called switch.

Then about five years later I started seeing this guff about the "switch", even Titleist now say they "switched" in 2017. But I swear to you the 2013 and 2015 versions were already saying that Pro V1x had higher spin with irons.

What I recall, but have no documentation for, is reading a Titleist marketing release in 2017 that said something like (paraphrasing from memory) in previous models DRIVER spin was lower with Pro V1x and therefore driver distance was perceived as lacking in Pro V1. In 2017 they lowered the Pro V1 driver spin to match Pro V1x (or nearly so) and there should no longer be any driver distance advantage for Pro V1x.

But again that's my own memory, albeit a very specific recollection in which I have a high degree of confidence. It's all a mystery to me why in early 2017 they (Titleist) would be saying the main change was lower driver spin in Pro V1 but then a year or two later they're talking about some complete reversal of relative ball characteristics.

I'm about ready to believe they just say whatever they think will sell the most balls...

ProV1X has always had higher greenside spin due to the core being firmer.  The greater firmness difference between cover and core/mantle, the more a ball will spin on partial shots and chips.  That never changed.  What changed was spin off full shots with irons/wedges
