Odyssey Putters - Stroke Balanced Toe Up 1

Socketeer

Recommended Posts

I have acquired a second-hand Odyssey Putter.  It is described as a Stroke Balanced Toe Up 1.  It's a blade type putter.

The grip is original and is a SuperStroke 1.0 Flatso.

Has anyone else got one of these?

The reason I ask is that it doesn't look right.  When you hold it address it "feels" as though something is bent because it looks and feels closed.

I've checked the orientation of the grip with the face and its OK.  I get the impression it's something going on with the hosel, but there are no visual signs of marking where it may have been adjusted or damaged, so I'm wondering if this an inherent design thing.

The guy who gave it me has had it from new and assures me he has never abused it.  He reckons it has felt "bent" since the day he had it and the reason he gave it me is because he has given up with it.

Other than that, it is in very good condition.

I have several Odyssey putters but this is the first blade type I have had.  All the rest are mallets.

Anybody got any information?

As @Jc0 said, that's how they're designed. I was just reading about these and I think the designer posted here a while back and said something about a slightly pressed forward hand position.

Edit: Found it!

Checked the grip against the face with an inclinometer.  It's spot on.

After some initial research, I believe that the "shaft lean" is an inherent part of the design intent.

I've pinched an excerpt from a review from way back.  The photo shows the shaft in relation to the head and face.

There's a short note included.

This is the view that I'm getting and is what set me off thinking about it.

I've never seen this design philosophy before and I've got quite a lot of putters in my collection, (which continues to grow!).  I speculated that it was some sort of optical illusion.

It's apparent that the player is expected to adapt to it.

I have sent Callaway/Odyssey an email asking them to explain to me what the thinking is behind this.  I await their reply with trepidation!

That is my gamer putter.  It is functionally equivalent to the new LAB Link putter (IMO).  I don’t feel that it sits closed.  Maybe your grip is off kilter.

Gave it a go on Tuesday for 18 holes.  I struggled with it.  Couldn't line it up.  Ended up not scoring on 2 holes, and 3 putting 4 greens.

I wasn't playing badly as I scored 35 points.  On a foreign course at that.

Trying out a second hand YES Sandy 12 which I acquired today.  In really good nick.  The previous owner is like me, he obviously looks after his clubs so that hopefully they'll look after him.

I come across some really delapidated second hand gear.  If only the owners would use head covers.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
