Creating a golf practice plan based on these statistics...

Recommended Posts

As a follow-up to my last post, I put together a quick spreadsheet to help me think more deeply about my golf statistics beyond GIR/FIR/Total Putts.

I'm thinking of these statistics as unforced errors, like in tennis. Found some interesting data...

Based on this analysis, I'm curious about what practice routines you all would prioritize and in what order.

This screams to me spending time practicing around the green. Averaging almost 4 three-putts per round says that your lag putting is really a weakness. Thankfully, that's a pretty easy skill to improve. Similarly, missing the green twice a round with a chip shot points to learning a basic chipping stroke, and executing it.

Another way to look at that is that by eliminating double-chips (something no reasonably good golfer EVER has to any meaningful degree) and eliminating 75% of the three putts, you shave FIVE strokes a round. And those five strokes don't take any remarkable athletic skill or meaningful improvement in distance or ball striking.

A lot of wasted strokes there inside of 150.  I'll get ganged up on for my answer but I would start with the short game.  Eliminating 3 putts and not wasting chips and pitches around the green will bring the scores down immediately.  You'll use those skills on EVERY hole you play.  Plus it's something you can start working on right away.

Short game and putting are almost always the fastest (and easiest) ways to shave some strokes at that level. Start there, then get to work on the full swing stuff (including distance wedges, which are full swing mechanics but shorter, not a different technique like pitching).

I agree with those above. Your ball striking and tee game is probably not great, but I can say that your short game is just burning strokes. I would start by practicing getting a proper chipping technique and then practicing speed drills for putting all day. In my opinion, good speed control is a fundamental skill in putting and will pay dividends in all lengths.

Echoing others - at that cap level;

  • Short term / easier to shove strokes : around the green and putting practices (making sure you can 'save your rounds')
  • Longer term / tougher / better differenciator : ball striking (ripple effect on short game, making sure your rounds are stress free, always nearGIR)

      Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
