8 handicap who has mastered a crappy pull draw

Recommended Posts

Slowly over the last few years teaching myself to hit a draw I've shifted into a pully drawy swing that is consistent, but leads to some funky shots under pressure here or there. I also have to line up pretty far right of the target to hit it on target, which i can do consistently but I'm sick of it. Saw a forum post on here talking about low vs high hands, i want to switch into a higher hands swing, this is my attempt at that. Ive heard keeping the right arm straight in the backswing is what you are supposed to do. Any thoughts tips or considerations would be extremely appreciated. Thanks guys

also the slow mo effect makes my preshot routine take a little bit, i look 4-5 times, so you can fast forward a bit to get to my swing

Club is getting sucked way inside and you have too much turn in the backswing, then the club comes in steep in the downswing, forcing an EE correction. When you in particular early extend, I see the face rotating very quickly at the bottom, causing those hooks. Pretty impressive for how big of a guy you are to be that athletic.

I would work on taking your hip and shoulder turn out of the backswing and work on the monte no turn cast drill as well. Priority is to get into a better position in the backswing. You can use Adam Scott's backswing as a check.

Agreed with @slytown, if you're looking for rebuild oriented changes @Bonesjojo22 then the main focus needs to be drastically reducing the amount of rotation/turn in the backswing as you're overswinging significantly which is throwing a bunch of things off. Fat Perez from Bod Does Sports is a great comp here (no offense hah) so i'll use him:

BonesVPerez1.gif.3c4389feafb8ccd9b45440cb79b1e967.gif

Now you both have more inside takeaways, but yours is WAY more severe. You're swinging the club like a baseball bat which isn't conducive to hitting something on the ground. A general rule of thumb of that you want the club pointing somewhere in the general vicinity of your target, and here you're pointing either into the parking lot or the first fairway, whatever is whats out of frame to the right, hah. The wrist preset drill is a good place to start here, the general feeling you want is "picking the club up and throwing it over your rights shoulder", not this current move which is swinging it around your waist.

This is the other main area to change. The amount that you're over-rotating here is generally represented by how much your head turns towards the camera. If you can't stay looking at the ball then you're exceeding your range of motion and starting to turn things that shouldn't be turned. This causes a whole bunch of issues with the need to now unwind all these things you've over-rotated in the downswing, something you don't come close to doing in time currently. Perez's backswing position here is a good one to target initially. It will feel like a half swing compared to what you're doing currently and it should, because you're currently doing a 150% swing.

As a result of all the above your hands and the club are generally stuck behind you and coming both very far from the inside and steep, whereas we see Perez's club and hands well out in front of him with the shaft plane perfectly intersecting his spine angle. We also see a significant weight shift difference which is very important as a bigger guy. You're only *just* getting off the outside of your right foot whereas Perez (and the pros) are well into their front foot at this point. Where your weight is determines two crucial things; what part of your pelvis wants to create rotation and where your low point in relation to the ball is located. Having too much weight on your back foot in the downswing is always bad because it means your right hip will want to come forward towards the ball like we see here (which causes early extension) and your low point wants to be behind the ball. Every fat shot you've ever hit is because of this, and this move should always be your indicator that you didn't get into your front side:

Your right side spinning out so severely through impact is a sign you never got into your front side, something you need to feel like you're closer to doing *in transition*. Just like the reality that a "proper" length backswing will likely feel like a half swing to you right now, a "proper" sequenced weight shift will almost feel like a reverse pivot. @MonteScheinblum illustrates this here.

The main things to focus on then would be:

1) Wrist preset drill to get the proper feeling of getting the club working way more "up" and less "around"
2) Shortening *everything* in the backswing to reduce all the over-rotation related issues
3) Get your pressure shifting into your front side WAY earlier, likely in conjunction with NOT getting so far into your back side in the backswing as part of #2.
