"odd" wedges

Found these wedges in one of my bins....all have steel shafts (mostly TT, I'm thinking) & composit grips or after-market grips.

L to R - unk wedge (alien-like), Sanwater, Sandie, Bite Wedge !. I also came across a PowerBilt sand wedge (on the sole "Renewal"). 

 

 

L-R:

the unk wedge has no markings, aluminum head w/interesting striated brown ferrule;

Sanwater wedge, no other maker mark, there is a shaft band w/just "made in USA" & the flag;

Sandie wedge, seems to have a Spalding ball & bird (tho not really) logo, no shaft band...I came across a couple of these in that bay thingie calling them Rawlings Sandie or Excel Sandie based on the shaft bands which had those names;

Bite Wedge 1 again no shaft band & on that bay thingie sometimes the name also has a "GL" stamp & a couple of sellers claimed Dunlop as maker (shaft band again? don't know, pics weren't that great)

 

Interestin that the unk wedge has that curvy groove....oh, the Bite Wedge has an aluminum backing w/a steel face...

Those are all cool. There is something about an odd wedge that tells the tale of the golfer's never-ending quest to tinker his way to a better score. It's absolutely core to the history of golf.

 

I picked this one up a few years ago and it's one of my favorite clubs. It also has a hexagon pyratone shaft. I have no idea what it is, but I love it.

was just doing a wee check in one of my books....seems the ribbed sole was prevelant in the 1930's. And I would think the hexagonal shaft would be a give-a-way, at least circa some era...

The shaft definitely puts it in the 30s. It's just so odd to come across a club that is completely unrecognizable.

 

I haven't played it yet, but I will play it eventually. I want to see how the ball comes out of the sand.

What does the face look like? That unk wedge of mine has that "wavey/curvey" groove, in fact - all "such grooves, dots,were outlawed by USGA in 1924 & the R&A in 1933...I also have 2 really wide spaced grooved irons that most definately were outlawed early on...trying to remember who used similar & won the British Open - the next year the clubs were outlawed...
