Gift, Mavrik irons stiff or regular?

Buying best friend Mavrik irons or Mavrik max irons (he likes Callaway) because he won't upgrade.

 

Based on his good drives I'm thinking he's around 95mph swing speed, so he's on the cusp between stiff and regular. Tempo is pretty smooth, no aggressive moves.

 

Miss is a snap hook, and isn't getting a lot of height, but that's a lot to do with him still using the really strong grip on his bottom hand that I had him do years ago to kill the slice.

 

His swing is now way more on plane and when I accost him into a neutral grip I think he should be a natural light draw player.

 

I'm leaning towards the max version for the extra height and forgiveness even though it won't go quite as far as the plain Mavrik.

 

I'm trying to get him out to the range tomorrow to get on the launch monitor, but may be too busy... 

 

Anyone advise on what the good or bad would be between the two? Looking for best guesses here with 20/20 hindsight applied after a few rounds once it warms up...

Partially surprise, partially he has no real understanding of specs, so only way would be a fitting or at least a testing... likely won't be time for it before Christmas.

 

I'm just buying him clubs cause I'm sick of him not buying them for himself, but knowing he'd enjoy the game more with the extra forgiveness and distance... 

 

So we're going for best guess here based on what the folks with the higher level of experience think...

You really can’t fit a shaft based on specs so anything would be a total WAG. Get on a LM and you could see a slow swinger do best with stiff and vice versa. But if I was forced to guess I’d go with regular. I’d probably go with the Max too unless he’s particular about top lines. You should always play the most forgiving iron you can stand to look at 😉

I had a set of the Mavrik Max irons.  I would strongly recommend them over the regular Mavriks for a low ball hitter.  The advice to get on a launch monitor is right on but if you want to surprise him, I would recommend the regular flex steel shafts based on your description of his game.

I was finally able to get him to the range today. 90mph driver swing, so definitely regular.

 

He was launching his irons well though when he listened to me about looking at inch in front of the ball and trying to hit a dime buried an inch below that mark...

 

That and getting his grip more neutral helped a lot.

 

He has a draw bias so the max make me a little nervous with that larger offset... So hard to decide though.

 

Going to see about the rogue st max as well as they seem to not be a ton more expensive.

I purchased Mavrik Max irons during the Black Friday sale for my son who swings his driver at 95mph speed.

The stock shaft is the KBS 80, it is quite light weighted, so I don't think both flexes are significantly different.

I chose the Stiff flex, and I hit several shots and it felt very good.

I ended up getting him a set of rogue st max but went with regular since he's around 90 or less...

 

Hopefully they help...
