Work Travel to Indianapolis, any good courses for a single?

Hey guys! I’ll be in Indianapolis in early May (4-5) and have the weekend to myself and figured I’d bring my sticks with me. I plan on getting 36 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday, I have to rely on Uber and will be staying in Downtown Indy. Any of the courses around there allow singles to book times? Is it pretty easy or subject to the normal tee time booking traffic of the Indy locals?

First, there is a big half marathon happening that weekend. 20,000 people will be running on Saturday. Depending on exactly where you are staying you may have some issues getting in and out of your hotel during the morning hours via car. It will be worth checking out the road closure schedule as you get closer.  https://www.indymini.com
 

I don’t think you will have much trouble booking as a single. Depending on the course, you may have to call instead of booking online though. As far as availability, it’s pretty weather dependent. I would say it’s normal tee time booking traffic but it’s nothing crazy. Indy has quite a bit of golf in the surrounding suburbs. Most places allow you to book a week in advance. If you book the first day of the booking window there should be plenty of options. If the forecast looks nice and you wait until midweek places will fill up fast. 
 

Unfortunately there’s nothing too good right around downtown. The Brickyard is by far the best public in the area, and really in entire state aside from the courses at French Lick. Downside is it’s very expensive compared to the other courses around. If price doesn’t scare you off it’s definitely worth a play.

If I were you I'd rent a car for the day and drive down to the Pfau course in Bloomington. It's IU's course and not super far away. As stated if you really wanted to spoil yourself go down to French Lick and play the Dye Course. It's an all day rate but I believe it's $425 or so.

You planning to play 36 at the same course or moving between rounds?

 

Brickyard is only thing close to downtown worth playing. Other courses within Indy proper are private. All the good publics are in surrounding burbs and will be a bit of a drive from downtown.... Mostly going north. The Fort definitely the best closest to you. 

 

You could try Eagle Creek if you don't want to travel too far. They actually have 36 holes there.... It's basically a muni within a larger city park and I can't speak to current conditions. It's a Pete Dye course but has kind of been cut up and the original Dye 18 is now part of each of the two 18s. The Sycamore course has more of the original layout. Very scenic.

The Fort is a good choice. Fun layout and has some really good elevation change on a few holes. That was going to be one of my suggestions based on location and course quality. 
 

@ruascott is spot on about locations. The fort isn’t far (25 minutes or so) but everything else is a bit spread out. 35-40 to prairie view which is very nice and then further to other better public courses in the area.
