20* Baffler as utility club...bad idea?

I was on my way back from the airport a few weeks ago and stopped by a 2nd swing (used club store) that I hadn't visited in about 3 years. They had a barely hit 20* Cobra Baffler (the old one with Hyper-Steel face insert). I was looking for a new utility club, the grip and shaft were pristine and the price was $25 so I had to bite.

In retrospect, the 20* loft may be an insufficient gap-filler. I carry a 8.5* driver and 13* 3 wood. One thing I did when I put an 18* '93 Burner in my bag as a utility club about 5 years ago was to pull my 3 iron rather than my 2 iron. However, with this 20*, I'm exactly sure how it will play with my 990's...have I basically replaced my 3 iron with an easier to hit 3 iron? If so, there might be too large a gap in distance between my 2 iron and 3 wood :)

I have this club as well. It was a bit too long for me, so I reshafted from the NS Pro 950 Stiff to a True Temper Dynamic Golf X100 shaft and it is money! Brought back the distance about 10 yards and it is even straighter than before. This idea came from my local Cobra rep who had done the same thing...

I would think that if the shaft is longer than your 3 iron you should hit it farther. You just might have bought an easier to hit 2 iron.

Well, my 990s are:

 

1 iron: 17* 39.75"

2 iron: 19* 39.25"

3 iron: 22* 38.75"

4 iron: 25* 38.25"

 

The Baffler is 20* 40" and I think it has a slightly higher launch because of the weights. Where would it fit in?

i would say you've got a higher flying, easier to hit, and slightly longer 2 iron. 3/4" of an inch is going to more than make up for 1* loft. i've got a 18* 2-iron @ 39.5" and 19* hybrid @ 40". i hit the hybrid much higher, much easier and slightly longer. also, as a comparison the 2-iron has a rifle 6.0 shaft and the hybrid dg s300 so this wasn't a gain because of differences in shaft weights.
