Question about golf course yardage measurements

Does anyone know where golf course yardage measurements are usually taken? Is if from the front of each tee to the middle of each green, or the middle of each tee to the front of the green, or what?

The CDGA measurements are so F'd up it's not even funny.

I'll add some info on this one for you...

 

On a par three it is from the 'official' tee marker to the center of the green.

 

On a straight par four or par five, no different.

 

On any curved/doglegs the distance is from the official tee to the landing spot (middle of any bends), then from that spot straight to the hole. A double dogleg would be from the tee, to the middle of the bend, to the next middle of the bend, to the center of the green.

I've found some course markings are woefully inaccurate. I made a yardage book for a course I play often using google earth, there are instances the tee marker and my virtual measurements were 15-20 yards off with the nod going to the satellite distances for accuracy. IME the plates are guidelines.

IME, Google Earth consistently underestimates distances measured in yards (compared to those measured using a rangefinder).

 

That said, I agree that some course yardages are way off.

I have yet to find a course here in Central Texas with accurate yardage markers. In fact, several I play do not have yardage markers and instead rely on the cart mounted GPS. There have been a few times where the cart GPS system wasn't working...made for real fun "eye balling" distances. Anyway, even when markers are present and are accurate many players don't know how to "read" them. For the most part they are to "center of green". Where many people mess up is that they forget the marker does not represent a straight line bisecting the fairway. It is a point along an arc around the green. In other words, if you are 10 yds dead left of the 150 marker, you need to add probably 5-10 yards to your estimate. Anyway, all of this is negated if you have a quality rangefinder. I use a Nikon 500G and absolutely love being able to pinpoint exact yardages to my selected targets. It has sped up my game, contrary to popular opinion, as I no longer have to walk off yardages or calculate yardages in my head. I simply shot my target(s) and go with the appropriate club.

Here in Germany, distances are measured to the front of the green from the fairway 99% of the time. Off the tee it's from the rating markers. On Par 3s and all other holes for the purpose of the yardage on the scorecard it's along the holepath to the middle of the green.
