Need spin

695cb's don't spin enough for me. I don't hit 'em hard enough to get 'em high and spinning enough to stop anything but the 9 and PW. My swing is pretty well established now, and I don't want to change the way I hit the ball simply to spin my mid irons more.

 

I'm considering the G-10, X-20 Tour and maybe the Cally FT. Any advice on the spin quality of those clubs?

 

Other ideas in a moderately forgiving iron that will ensure plenty of spin?

You want more spin, buy a softer ball...................I recommend Callaway HX Tour or the new Tour i. Bridgestone b-330s spins a lot. They are pricey, around $44.00 a dz.......You want to look for a two or three piece ball. You will NOT get a lot of spin out of a 4 piece ball(like NIKE) unless you have a fast swing. NOW going to a softer ball you will lose a little distance off the t-box. Noodle and TOP-FLITE soft are good and cheap soft balls.

I've tried em all. The softer balls give me more spin with the wedges, but they're all roughly the same off a 6 iron (even the ball test articles confirm that).

 

FWIW -- I play V1x or Nike Black day to day.

Those would be the wrong balls the play.

Been there, done that. Great for wedges. In fact, they spin too much for my swing on full wedges. The ball starts rolling all over the place and I prefer it to stay where it lands.

 

From 150+ yards, not enough spin with those balls and my swing on the 695cb.

 

And I'm not about to fix what ain't broken in my swing. Isn't the point of having equipment choices that we can have gear that suits our swing, rather than the other way round?

 

Back to my question -- is there any difference in the way the grooves on these various irons affect mid-iron ball spin? The 695cb has shallow v grooves that are, by design, low spin. I want to put the same swing on the ball that I do now and have it spin more. If distance and trajectory change, no biggie. I can adjust to that.

I guess the only thing I can tell you is to send them out and have U grooves cut.

 

I typically choose a ball working from the green back... and compromise on things I can't find a happy medium with.

no offence meant, but if you aren't spinning 695's you won't do alot better with much else. You could try weakening them, they are 2* strong....

I still stand by my original reply, hit down and compress the ball.

Srixon i-701 tours have spin milled faces on all the irons, if they don't do the job. The job can't be done.

I don't think anyone else mentioned this but the type and flex of shaft you use can make a big difference in ball flight.

If you are using a DG you might think about trying a Dynalite or a Flighted Rifle and perhaps go down 1/2 flex. This should increase your trajectory and increase your spin. You don't have to do the whole set. Just do the 5 or 6 iron and see if it gives you what you are looking for. It is not cheap to have a set of irons reshafted but it is less expensive than buying a whole new set. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

That is a good idea. I do think the shafts (6.0 Rifles) are too stiff for me anyway. As I've gotten my swing more consistent, I've actually slowed it down a little.

 

I'll look at the Srixon irons mentioned above.

For clarification, the pro v1x can actually spin more with certain shots than the pro v1

you have clubs that are meant for real hard hitters that spin the ball too much, thats what they were designed to do. bend the lofts back 2 degrees and soft step them twice and see how that works

Lots of factors to create spins.

 

The biggest factor of all is how you hit them.

 

I've proofed this to a local pro that a club without groves will spin the ball enough as long as the surface and ball are streaky clean with the right attack angle to the ball.

That's what the Titleist fitter told me, too. I either have to hit these a lot harder, or move them back and slam down onto them. Since my iron swing is finally working, I don't want to do that. The fitter also didn't think changing lofts or shafts would make as much difference as different irons.

 

Example: Yesterday I twice hit a B. Jones 5h about 170 into greens. The ball was sitting 12-15" from the mark. I hit a 7i, 8i and 9i into three other holes and each time the ball was sitting 10y upgreen from the mark. With any given swing and ball, different clubs will spin the ball different amounts. I need an iron that will give me more spin without requiring me to change my swing.
