another swing weight question

adding length to an iron shaft
Please, will someone with more knowlege help me? I have minimal knowledge about club fitting and hope that someone can follow my thoughts below.

I want to add a 1/2 inch in length to an iron shaft. I would be pulling the shaft and replacing it with the same shaft, just a 1/2 inch longer. ( I know there are lie issues with this too, but not my question at this time) From what I understand this change in length will add a few points to the swingweight of the club. Correct?

Now, my first question is can this change in swingweight be felt or noticed by feel? Is this weight change felt by the player, meaning does the head end of the club actually feel heavier or is it simply something the scale will tell you and the "felt" weight by the player stays the same? If the player wants to also add "felt" weight to the iron head would you have to add additional head weight?

Secondly, how does the addition of 1/2 inch in length and added swing weight (due to added shaft length, NOT adding additional swingweight) affect the flex of the shaft?

If I am way off here let me know. :good:
Thank you in advance.

Hey, I have minimal knowledge re: club fitting too!

Actually though, I think I can answer this as since I actually learned a lot of this info from the users on this site and by using the search feature and reading pages and pages of archived threads. I had these same questions about a month ago....

As I understand it, 1 inch of shaft change=6 SW points. So lengthening a club by half and inch will result in an increase of 3 points.

Can this change in swingweight be felt? I remember reading a few posts where some members were saying that most amateurs cannot feel the difference in 3 SW points. For myself, I'm about as "amateur" as you can get, and I'm pretty sure I can tell the difference in 3 points, especially if you're taking something like a stock Ping iron @ C9 and comparing it to a more industry-standard D2 club.

As far as what the player feels, I could be wrong on this: I guess you could say that the clubhead feels heavier, but to me, the entire club just feels heavier. If the player wanted to feel more weight in the clubhead, the SW in some way would need to be increased; I've heard of some talking about putting on a lighter grip to lighten that end of the club, but more often, players would stick on a couple of strips of lead tape to the head instead.

Your question about how 1/2 inch would affect flex? I asked this exact same question about 3 weeks ago and only got one response. The member told me that the flex's change would not be noticeable.

thanks mookie,

another question though. say I have 2 of the same iron heads, one has a 109 gram shaft in it and it swingweights at d2. the other has a 130 gram iron shaft and swing weights at d2. I hit both but not knowing which one at which time. Just by feel I would assume that it would feel like the 130gram shaft was at a heavier swingweight than the 109gram shaft. maybe I am not after a swingweight change just an overall weight change by going to a heavier shaft. any thoughts?"

thanks wildwilly11 for the posts

I guess I am just trying to figure out if I need a shaft change or a swingweight change to help me with club head feel, timing, and tempo.

Only testing by me will give the answer that is best for my swing, but if anyone elce has gone down this path I would like to hear about it. Thanks

Shoot....I could be missing something here, but if you have two of the same clubheads with two different shafts of that large of a weight difference (109 vs. 130 grams) , the swingweights of the clubs would not be the same. Unless I'm wrong, I don't think the two clubs could both weigh in at D2....But again, I am NO expert, and all of the knowledge I have was acquired through this site...

Someone told me that 9-10 grams in a shaft = 1 swing point. So, the D2 club with the 109-gram shaft would weigh in at a D4 if you put in the 130-gram shaft (sounds like a DGS 300).

Again, these options sound familiar to me only because for the past 2 months, I've been trying to figure out some of the ways I could purchase a used set of Pings that fit my static #s and my personal feel. Personally, I really dislike the C9 standard swingweight of Pings--just way too light for me. I'm also not crazy about the slightly shorter (-1/4 inch) shafts. The 130-gram DGS shafts were also something I was looking into, since the heavier shaft would likely bring my ball flight down to a more optimal height--bringing the swingweight up was also nice too.

Good luck.

Half inch will add about 6 swing weight points.

The clubs will feel much heavier.

1/2 is about 3 swing weight points about 6 grams. you can have a heavier shaft and still end with same swing weight depending on balance of shaft. if you want to try playing around with the static weight get some bolts different lengths and stick in the vent hole of the club (grips are cheep) if you want to play with swing weight add some lead tape to the head

thanks for the quarter tip. I went out and tried it today and did very easily notice the difference in swingweight, but it may have been more than the 3 points that you said it would add because all I had was black electric tape and I had to use a lot of tape to get it to stay while hitting balls. My irons are d2 to start with so I might have been in the d6 range. I did like the added head weight and would prefer this setup to my current setup, but still may try out a heavier shaft like a dgs300. (currently in a zz 65 109g shaft) So with the tape and coin adding about 4 swingweight points, how many grams did I add to the club?

Also I did notice a more solid feel when hitting balls with the iron that had the quarter on the back (8 iron) than I did with my 7 iron without the quarter. Was this caused because of the added weight in the head of the iron made the iron feel more powerful, or because the added weight caused me to swing with a better tempo making better contact? I realize it would be hard for you to know, but any guesses.
