Fitting results - HELP!

Confused...

Ok, so about 10 days ago, I go into PGA Tour Superstore for a “flight plan”. The guy uses an MP-60 to fit me, and I think they were all DGS300s or something similar in the shaft. With the standard club, I was hitting everything about ¼ inch towards the toe. 2* upright was still towards the toe, and ½ in longer was a little more spread out, but again, still towards the toe. 1/2in long AND 2* up puts me pretty much dead center on the sweet spot.

Well, I spend the next 10 days doing research and think I have sold myself on x-20 tours. I go back in today, to find out they don’t have a callaway fitting cart, so I start hitting a standard 6 iron – which according to specs on the websites is already ¼ inch longer than the mp60 with a lie angle of 61.5 vs 60 on the MP60. Well, of course today I am hitting EVERYTHING ½ way between the heel and the center of the clubface.

The guy I talked to today was NO help at all. Since they don’t have a callaway fitting cart (WTF?!), I am left guessing, or buy them and keep having them bent until I get it right. I am kinda locked into PGA tour superstore, because I have a substantial gift card that I was going to use towards this purchase.

Any thoughts? Could it be the shafts? These were project x flighted 6.0s. Wouldn’t these need to be FLATTER to move impact from the heel more towards center? I havn't really swung a club since my last visit there, so I don't think my swing has changed substantially, and certainly not to move impact by a full inch from the toe to the heel (I hope!!).

I guess my real question is this - Would bending the club flatter get the impact back to center (so I can buy off the rack clubs), or would that big of change require length?

Every variable that is different will yield a different result. If you are tested on a Miz head and a DGS300 or something similar, and then tested on a Cal head with a Project X shaft, you are not comparing heads, you are comparing two different head/shaft/weight/flex/ combinations.

 

You will have the best success if you hit several combinations of length and heads and shafts. Go back to PGATSS and smack a few lengths. They have a length board in their repair department- make them show you that the lengths you are trying have some comparative value. Do not take the word of the label on the test club, or even their word.

 

Choose the shaft/head/weight combination that feels the easiest and most powerful to swing, and choose the combination that shows on the monitor which club is giving you the best combination of distance and consistency and choose the club you feel like you are hitting the most repetitively solid.

 

Your lie angle is an important part of the equation, but you can always adjust this to your stance and swing after the fact. it is much harder to change the head and/or shaft.

Check your specs on the MP 60's. Std lie angle on a Six iron is 61*, not 60*. Also realize that our swings are subject to subtle changes from day to day, and not to get too worked up over 1/4 of an inch here or there. If you can, hit some shots outside, and judge your ballflight. Any good store should have access to an outdoor range. I have been in the golf industry fitting clubs for 13 years, so I have some idea of what I'm talking about.
