DGX100 produce lower ball flight than S300 in irons?

I just started playing again after an 8 year layoff. I shoot mid 80's now, but I have been playing/practicing 4 times a week for the last 2 months and the only thing holding me back from breaking 80 is putting,wedge play from 100 in, and bad (but fun!) decisions, I guess that is everybody's problem. I hit a lot of fairways and greens, but I like to take risks on hitting par 5's in two and playing hero shots. Just starting playing an Amateur tour and I'm eliminating the bad decisions and laying up, and wouldn't you know I have taken 5 shots off my avg score. Anyway, my ball flight has always been high and I'm just curious as to if I can improve that by simply installing an X100.

 

All things being equal, same iron head, consistent swing and such, would installing an X100 produce a lower ball flight than an S300? Would any loss of distance also occur? If yes, best guess on how much? A full club?

 

If this matters, I suppose it does, I have what I would describe as a Ernie Els/Freddy Couples style swing tempo. Of course not anywhere on the planet as pretty and smooth as those two, but just for the purpose of how I load a shaft, that is how I swing. I carry my Mizuno Pro Forged S300 +1/4" 5-iron 185-190.

 

Also, if I go to the X100's and they prove to be too stiff for my swing, would soft stepping them 1 time give me something closer to the S300? Would soft stepping effect trajectory any?

The only way to know is to try them.

 

Reshaft one iron - maybe an 8 iron - and play with it for a couple of weeks.

 

It's a cheap test and you'll know for sure...

Yes I agree. However, I need to order some new irons as my 12 year old Mizuno's are worn out and I don't have the luxury of waiting 4-8 weeks to have them refurbished. So I would like to order some new irons with the X100, like yesterday, if they in fact would produce a lower trajectory.

 

I know it is impossible for someone on the internet to say what it would do with my individual swing, but I'm talking in just "General terms". As in generally speaking, would it lower it or not?

i don't know if they'll produce a lower ballflight, but should flatten it out a bit and have maybe a little less spin.

It's hardly scientific but as someone who has played DG X100 for nigh on 20 years, my experience is that I do hit them marginally lower and flatter than S300 or S400. I try a lot of irons out of idle curiosity and the majority tend to be fitted with a S shaft when they're Dynamic Gold.

 

As always, your results may vary, but I think the concensus is generally that they'll flight it slightly lower all else being equal.
