Increasing Clubhead Speed

Best drill or exercise?
Well, about 5 months ago I got on a launch monitor with a driver and registered an average clubhead speed of 104 mph. Since then I had been taking lessons and practicing about 4 times a week. Got back on the launch monitor again two days ago and was expecting to gain much more clubhead speed. Turns out that after all the work I'd been doing, my average clubhead speed is now 105 mph. Only 1 mph gain after 5 months of practice!

Now that my techniques are a bit better, I'd like to work on increasing that clubhead speed to about 110 mph in the next 5-6 months. Without changing my swing and my clubs, what do you guys suggest I work on? I heard that doing wrist curls help, but I'm interested in what, specifically, is the best drill or exercise to work on? ie. left wrist or right wrist is more important? weight? sets of how many?...etc Also any other drills or exercise other than the obvious wrist curls? Thanks

Increasing your lag is an obvious way of increasing clubhead speed. Another would actually be too loosen the muscles in your arms and wrists before you swing, this helps to create more whip through impact. Contrary to popular belief, the smoother the swing, the faster the clubhead speed, rather than the quicker your swing tempo.

Be careful when trying to quicken your swing though, it is essential that you keep your balance and stability during your swing to ensure consistency.

Personally, I would rank flexibility above strength, and then "core" strength above arm/wrist strength in importance to generating clubhead speed. There are lots of books and websites that focus on golf strength/flexibility exercises. The one I use is Get Yourself in Golf Shape by Cindy Reid. It outlines golf specific stretch and strength routines, most of which that can be done at home with basic exercise equipment.

I would recommend a couple of things which I have had success using with other players. Get a swing fan and use for two sessions a day. In the beg, you might be able to go for two minutes of consecutive swings. Do two sets in the morning and two in the evening. Also, holding positions with a weighted club during these sessions is very helpful.

Buy a swing radar to measure your swing speed. Every time you practice, take the machine with you a limit yourself to ten ball trying to go at max speed.

Strength and flexibilty are great to improve but not all players gain increases in mph with the clubhead. The goal is to make the club go faster.

Hopefully, these ideas help with you golf.

Excuse me, but what is this red SpeedStik?

The Speed stik is exactly what it sounds like. A long Red or Blue stick about 50 inches in length with a swing speed measuring tip on it.

It seems to be a good way to at least learn what your average and maximum speed is. It may well function as a swing tempo device , but the only deficiency I can find in it is its lack of golf club appearance/feel.

It is endorsed by Viijay Singh (sorry about the spelling ) and can be purchased a few different places that I know of online. PM me if you want to find a good price on one, I know where to get them...
