What does this mean..?
Hi,

I used electrical tape today on the bottom of my irons. After hitting about 20 shots or so i noticed there was much more wear on the electrical tape towards the toe of the club. Which way should i adjust the lie angle to counteract this problem, flat or upright? Also, I'm just curious, can you adjust the lie angles on a driver and woods? I was almost certain that its possible but someone told me today that you can't adjust them. Thanks

It means that your irons need to be bent upright. You can figure approximately 1 degree for each 1/2" for a very rough estimate. Drivers (and woods) cannot be bent upright, but due to their rounded rocker sole bottom, it's not needed nearly as much as it doesn't come into contact with the ground nearly as much. There are a small handful of hybrids that can be bent with the right tool, but for 95-99% of the models, those would fall under the same situation as your woods.

You wold need to have your irons bent upright, but depending on far towards the toe the marks are, the more upright they need to be bent. For your woods, yes it is possible for someone to bend them, but there is alot of risk involved (breakage of the clubhead.) There is alot of heat that is involved with dending woods.

The impact of lie angle on a golf shot has a direct relationship with the the loft angle. The greater the loft angle, the greater the face plane at impact will tilt for a misfit club and result in a directional error.

This is why we notice a wedge or shot iron that is several degrees off, lie-wise, have a greater impact on direction than the longer irons. And the woods, with less loft, exhibit even less of this face plane tilt.

Regarding the sole of a club, a certain type of sole can give you a more solid hit, (or less solid for certain swing types) but this has nothing to do with the lie/direction relationship. The proof is in the evidence of two shots from different shots, one contacting the ground, and another off a tee, (without contacting the ground). The directional troubles will be the same- completely related to the face plane tilt, but never related to the sole contacting the ground.

Ralph Maltby has preaching this fact for 3 decades, but still these myths persist.

Best regards, 3

Morton, that is not correct. As was correctly pointed out above, the sole's contact with the ground has NOTHING to do with the directionality of the ball. The reason woods generally do not "need" to be bent is because their loft is low enough that a poor lie angle does not change the face angle much. The higher the loft, the more lie angle affects face angle.

You're very correct that the loft greatly reduces the need to adjust the lie angle. However, if an iron is an incorrect lie angle, the toe or heel will catch coming through impact and that exaggerates how much the head will twist at impact- furthering the amount the ball will go off line. These two factors work very much hand in hand. A straight push or pull is often a sign of an incorrect lie angle. However, when there is a curve to the ball flight as well, that is usually a sign that the head is coming through the impact unsquare- often a result from twisting from that incorrect lie angle.

Ken, I strongly disagree, as does Wishon. The ball is already off the face by the time any twisting occurs. A poor lie angle AUTOMATICALLY causes the face angle to be off line.

yes, thats true when making perfect contact, but hit a bit fat with a incorrect lie angle the club is going to open or close before contact

If I lengthen my irons 1/2", how does that affect the lie angle?

I did the black tape test last night (awesome idea BTW), and I'm hitting mostly on the toe half of the club. So, they are too flat but I think too short.

Thoughts?

If you lenghten your irons 1/2" that will make the lie angle more upright by about 1 degree. With not seeing you actually hit the ball, it sounds as if your club are indeed too flat...not sure about length.

I'm 6'2" with WTF of 35". My clubs were reshafted 1/4" over by Ping (I3+s) which makes them about standard to the other OEMs I think. I hit some Cobra FPs that were 1" over and they felt a lot better. I just feel bent over when I hit the Pings.

I'm thinking of extending them another 1/2"-3/4".
