Toothpaste for cleaning clubs/irons

BionicMan

Recommended Posts

I just cleaned my Mizuno MP-57's with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush and it worked amazingly. I wonder if anyone else has done this? My irons are brand new, and I was concerned that it might be too abrasive, but it worked out perfectly. Much better than soap and water...especially for removing range ball residue. Thoughts?

See the line...your comments speak volumes about you. Constructive not condescending...will work in all facets of your life.

Bulldog, the poor quality range balls I was hitting left a residue on my clubs that soap and water wasn't quite removing. I could still see a faint mark from the balls on the club. The toothpaste left them looking as new, and I thought I'd pass it along as something for others to try.

Labil,I had heard the same, but never though of using it on clubs.

Hmmm.. strange.. I have made it this far in my life and haven't even met you, however did I do such a thing without your advice? Maybe I should start brushing my clubs with a toothbrush and toothpaste after all.

My comments reflect reality and common sense. I apologize if you can't see that, or maybe you own a toothpaste factory and have an unlimited supply so you are just looking for things to do with it? Maybe toothpaste you car next to give it that ultra shine and have it smell minty fresh at the same time... can't get any better than that.

Warm water and a hard bristle brush works perfectly. I think you might need to reconsider where you toothpaste goes.

Why?

Toothpaste has a variety of uses.

Cleans stuff, which could be jewelry, clubs, tooths, getting stains out of carpets, cleaning headlight lenses, removing grass stains from white leather shoes, etc.. I actually used it to buff scratches out of my iPod (not on the display).

Toothpaste is right behind duct tape on the "you can use it for anything" factor.

Why all the hostility to a simple question as to whether we could benefit or not from a discovery he made? Your second response was worse and very reflective of the kind to avoid on the golf course................wait better to join their group and beat the crap out of them scorewise. I love to play with/against your type on the course.

Thanks for the input and I'll try it to see what it does to a set of irons that need a little clean up work. Thanks

He asked for thoughts. I gave mine, deal with it.

As for all this "it's great on jewellery and ipod talk" ... he asked for thoughts on how it cleans clubs... not everything in your mothers secret drawer where you aren't allowed to look.

I'm sorry, thought I'd give you some general knowledge. Thought you might need it.

I've always used a toothbrush for cleaning clubs, but never toothpaste.

Water works fine, with perhaps a dab of washing up liquid for ballmarks and what-have-you.

In terms of preserving finishes, I've always used either Turtle Wax car wax, or a quality car polish (e.g. 'Mer') on my clubs. A going-over of the chrome areas of the clubheads and the shafts works wonders. I play my clubs to death, and whilst the sweetspots get worn through with bullseye marks the other areas of the chrome are pretty solid and the shafts are generally devoid of any pitting.

I also Turtle Wax the painted crowns of my woods with good results.

Amen to that parpar...exactly what I was thinking.

I tried the toothpaste on the old grip and it seems to have worked nicely. I've just never tried any "professional" grip cleaning supplies with which to compare the results. It certainly got its tack back and doesn't look/feel any worse for wear. btw, the grip I cleaned was a Golfpride tour wrap. Toothpaste was Arm & Hammer paste without baking soda...can't even imagine that's important, but in the interest of full disclosure....

I first learned of using toothpaste in this fashion when I was younger. Most of my relatives kept silver serving dishes on display, and they would tarnish rather quickly. They found that using toothpaste as a polishing compound would not only leave a great shine, but would protect the surfaces as well. Just a tiny bit on a rag and polish away. A little of the stuff goes a long way.

The toothpaste/duct tape comment was perfect ! Toothpast is just a super fine polishing compound for your teeth. I don't think he was talking about cleaning the dirt and grass with the toothpaste, just a second step to go after the ball marks and scuffs that didn't come off after the initial wash. Toothpaste's alternative uses are amoung thousands of home remedies that most of the younger generation know nothing about. Not everybody has polishing compound in the garage cabinet, but everybody (except for one anal butthead from Canada in particular) has toothpaste. Thanks for sharing the tip. Never thought about waxing the painted surfaces of my metal woods, thanks for that tip too.

instead of toothpaste I've had better results with baking soda. It is less messy and cleans up easy. I use baking soda on glassware so I know it in not gonna hurt a clubface, were as toothpaste has added sugers and chemicals that may affect a clubs finnish. Also car wax is great for protecting the finish on woods since the paints are much the same as a car has.

toothpaste also works well if you want to clean copper clubs and putters -- it's a great silver polish. i also get ball marks from the range, but i use a scotchbrite pad and dishsoap.
