Regular Binoculars as a tool?

First off, I apologize if this is in the wrong section but it doesn't really apply to GPS systems or Range Finders so I didn't put it in that section. Feel free to moderate and move the thread if needed.

 

Now.. Has anyone carried Binoculars on the course before? I have been thinking about it because I hate the idea of forking out the money for a range finder when I am a pretty decent judge of distance as is. I would use the binoculars as a tool to "read the greens" as best as possible from a ways out when I am playing unfamiliar courses. And I think it would help to dial my thoughts onto the pin a little better than just looking with naked eye.

 

Anyone else ever experiment with it? Would it be against the rules in a tournament?

I was thinking about doing the same thing. I wear contacts and my sight is okay but sometimes I need help seeing the flag on a par 5 especially if there is a dog leg or no wind blowing the flag.

 

A few places like Wal Mart and maybe Target have little cheapie range finders for less than $30.

 

I wish I had a laser for the local muni driving range. They use flags for the distance and they move the tee line each day to let the grass grow back. I am clueless about the distances on the range but on the course I usually pick the right club. I have a mild paranoia about hitting it over the green on my approach so sometimes I am short. I need more practice.

get yourself one of the sonocaddies. cheap simple and bulletproof. you look down, theres the distance, hit the ball.
