V-steel vs. new technology

What should I do?

I have a chance to pick up a brand new V-steel for $110. I have an extra NV stiff shaft that I could put in it. Therefore, I'm looking at a V-steel with NV shaft for about $125. Should I go this route or pay an extra $75 bucks and get one of the new R7 fw's or a Cally x-wood (also $200). Would I be missing out on any new technological benefits by going with the V-steel? Your comments are appreciated.

Get the V, thats what you wanted to here. The old technology still has some kick. Also you would save $75 bucks. Thats two rounds of golf. :birthday:

IMO.....V-Steel hands down. I own one and will never give it up.

from a ping guy to another ping guy, go with the v-steel. trust me this thing is awesome. I have that same crappy stock shaft with the same crappy stock grip, but i will be getting an nv 65 .350 tip wood shaft and a golf pride grip. it sux that such a sought after company makes such inferior components for such a great wood. I guess they can because people still buy them. I wonder if they put that same crappy shaft and grip on the r7 tp's???

I am brand new to the game (and to these boards as well) but the first wood I replaced from my starter set was my 3 with a regular flex steel shafted 15 degree V-Steel. I tried quite a few others in the simulator at the store (Ping, Nike NDS, Nike Sasquatch to name a few) but liked the Taylor Made the most. To me it seems very easy to hit off the tee and pretty forgiving. I liked it so much I had to get the 5-Wood as well. And they are now $99 at Dicks, I believe.

 

edit - Actually looking at Slicers bag I kind of wish I had gone that route instead - 4 Wood and 7 Wood. I am not sure what your handicap is but if its high like mine you may want to check out the 4. At 16.5 degrees it won't be much shorter but it may give you more control and be easier to hit out of the fairway.

I have found technology to be greatly improved in 2 areas

1)putters-MOI, ALignment aids and different face materials have made putting easier

2) Drivers 460 CC/Titanium face offer improve distance and forgiveness

3) A larger selection of shafts and fitting devices(launch monitors, etc)

has made fitting yourself a must.

 

As for Irons and Fairway woods I havent noticed that much difference in the past 5 years in improvements. The V STeels are fine though I prefer my Callaway Steelhead III's more they are in the same class.

Personally, I'll take anything with a forgiving sole (i.e. V-Steel, Callaway, Exotic, Sonartec, Mizuno).

Don't forget the Nike SQ - Ridiculously easy to hit off the deck with a very forgiving sole.
