5 Wood Suggestions

Pittman

Recommended Posts

Here's the thing: I need a new 5 wood. I have a Cobra SZ 3 wood with 15 degrees of loft amd a Hogan CFT Hybrid with 21 degrees of loft, so I need something to fill that gap. I am a pretty high handicapper, so I would like something that is really easy to hit off the deck and is fairly forgiving. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!

I'm using a titleist 904F at the moment. Best fww I ever hit of the fairway! From the tee is it a little less forgiving.

Because you are a high handicapper I won't advise the titleist to you but a Ping G5. I tried it just for fun a few weeks ago and was loving it! Easy of the deck despite its big head and deep face and easy of the tee because of its big head and deep face! Off course a Cobra (with or without offset!) is an easy club as well. V-steel and Steelhead are the most used clubs on tour. I'd say give these four clubs a try!

A fwy wd with a shallow face tends to be easier to hit off the deck. Your best bet it to just find something you like- maybe a matching cobra, if you hit the 3wd well?

I'd say give the Adams Ovation a try ($40!). They are shallow faced and get the ball up really quick. Adams woods tend to be very forgiving too. As long as you are not looking for all out distance, but to fill a gap- don't overlook the Ovation. They fly high and land soft.

For some high swing speed players- over 100mph it balloons on them.

I play to a 12-14 h'cap with a medium tempo swing. I demo'd just about everything out there last Nov/Dec, and ended up buying a Mizuno F-50 5-wood. Has a composite crown with weight low to get the ball up in the air easily, but still has a penetrating and long ball flight. Slightly heavier head than some other woods, but nice crisp feel when struck. Plenty forgiving, too.

A close second in my book was the Cleveland Launcher. It has a shallower head than the Mizuno, so not as comfortable/easy to hit off the tee, IMHO.

Two more to consider are the Cobra F/Speed, and Nike T60. Both of these clubs have deep faces (ie., taller from top to bottom of club face than Mizuno or Cleveland clubs), and so are easy-peasy to hit off the tee. Most of the clubhead weight is low, to help get the ball up in the air off the grass. The Cobra has a larger (confidence-inspiring?) head than the Nike.....might be the way to go for you, if you like the look?

Best advice is to go to a reputable store and hit as many of them as you can find, until you end up happy! Simple, huh?

I have the R7 TP. The TP is worth the extra money. You can switch the weights around until you dial in your best configuration. This club costs a little more, but it will insure that you can get close to the right specs for you. I can't say how good it is compared to others. I have not hit many other 5 woods. I am a recent convert from the 2 iron.

You may also want to consider a hybrid to fill the gap, using the same loft as the 5-wood. I did this and my distance was the same but the ball flight was higher, leading to better approach shots on the green. These are crazy easy to hit and very forgiving. Just about every brand makes one so you should find one you like.

What tarik says makes sense, so you should also keep hybrids in mind. It didn't work for me, as I found I hit a 5 wood much better than an 18 degree hybrid, but different strokes for different folks. On the other hand, my friend decided on an 18 degree Perfect Club, which after a few shots on the range didn't seem that bad.

As a high handicapper you also may want to note what the difference in distance is between your 3 wood and your 22 degree hybrid. If it is not that big, then don't worry about it for now.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
