Callaway Legacy vs. FT-5??

I currently play the FT-5 with BB combination. I really like this driver and shaft but would prefer a bit more forgivness. Seems that when I miss the sweet spot I'm penalized quite a bit. Being a 15hcp this happens more often then I would like.

 

With this being said, would the Legacy driver be more forgiving while providing similar distance? Can anyone compare the two.

 

Also, what about shafts. I really like the characteristics of the BB, can I get this installed in my Legacy? Am I stuck with the factory shaft?

I don't have the Legacy Driver, but I have a Hyper ERC (it's predecessor). I can tell you that the FT-i AND FT-5 are more forgiving than the Hyper ERC. I think the FT-5 and FT-i both have hight MOI numbers. The Hyper ERC generates alot of ball speed so it's long. When my swing is on, the Hyper ERC is more accurate than either the FT-i and FT-5.

 

Note that the Legacy and Hyper ERC are both draw biased.

Most JPGA pros even those not on the Callaway staff are playing the Legacy over the FT5. Not that we should base what we play on what the pros choose of course :clapping: The latest Golfstyle magazine shows about a 2:1 ratio in favor of the Legacy.

The Legacy is by far Callaways best driver. It is much improved over the Hyper ERC and Hyper X. Much more explosive than the FT5. There is a built in draw bias but it works with you to hit power draws and not quick snipes. Great club.

The Legacy has a newer, updated Hyperbolic Face, thin crown technology, etc. Keep in mind that all this technology can be costly. The Legacy will cost you at least $850.00 US.

the Legacy outguns the FT-5 any day of the week. I own both, as well as the FT-9, and FT-iq Tour, and when I nut it, the Legacy by far rolls past the FT-iq (next longest driver) by 10-15 yards (using Srixon Z-URC golf balls...late afternoons at my country club i take a dozen balls out and just go for broke with a few driver combinations) of course this has a lot to do with the shaft, etc. But a Legacy hit in the sweet spot will roll by a FT-5 with the same shaft and headweight. I'll put money on it. It's the hyperbolic cup face deal they've got...really maximizes distance on off-center hits and absolutely kills it on a dead center shot.

 

that being said, I just ordered a new, '09 model Legacy called the Legacy Aero. I like the '08 model enough that I've got two of them with a Diamana D Series (whiteboard) 73-Stiff. and holy hell, there is not a more solid feeling driver in the Callaway lineup.

 

although the FT-5 and Legacy are somewhat similar in shape (just the outline...but the coloring and materials are obv way diff...legacy is all titanium), the sound is so different. The FT-5 sounds hollow, and the Legacy just has a solid thump to it. Off center hits are way longer on the Legacy than the FT-5. the FT-5, while a great club if you like to work the ball and can hit it on the sweetspot every time, i know i can't hit it dead center every time...which is why i LOVE the legacy. I travel to japan quite frequently and always try to find one at the used golf stores (which in japan sell clubs that you would think are brand new..."used" there is like 10 minutes at the range and not liking a club and returning it to the used shop instead).

 

if anyone's interested in buying one, at the right price I'd sell em. these things are beautiful but i CAN'T wait for the '09 model...which is supposed to be even easier to hit.

 

And I scored mine for way lower than what tourspec sells. and tourspec, believe it or not, is actually selling the club at a good price.

Order it from Golftown in Canada, they have the Legacy at 799 cnd (about 699 us.)

i'm picking up the '09 version, the Aero. for roughly $600 since i bought two at once, an 8.5 and 9.5 loft. golf town only sells the previous model, and only in a 10.5 it seems.

I have a fubuki in my Legacy and it is the best combo I have ever hit. I also have the Hyper ERC and I liked it much better than the FT 5 I owned. Guess I'll have to try the Aero and sell the Hyper ERC.
