Is my shaft causing this problem?

Forgive me for my ignorance- I'm relatively new to the sport in term of really starting to understand the technical aspect of it.

I have been using a r5, that has a aldila 75X shaft(orange). I bought it a while back used, and the guy mentioned the aftermarket x-stiff shaft.

I hit it pretty well I guess, my mechanics aren't the best, but I get around a mid/low launch from it, and I've got around a 80-90mph SS at the moment with it.

I was under the impression from several people, and using it in the simulator and LM that I could benefit from a regular flex and lighter shaft, to get my swing speed up to help gain some distance and such.

I liked where my ball flight was before, and I just recently purchased a bone stock Burner 9.5* with the fuji 50g regular flex shaft.

It's night and day to what I'm used to doing, and today I tried it out on the course, and my ball flight is almost in orbit to what I'm used to, and while I can't tell if I'm losing distance, I feel like I am. I feel like it's 1 out of 2 hits are verge of skyballs almost.

Now, I've got a cracked rib, and I was holding back on the swing, but I feel like the driver "whips" around during my swing, and perhaps something is out of whack. I tried tee'n the ball differently, but no avail.

Question is, would this lighter and lower flex shaft do this? Cause the higher shots? I feel like I've got little control over my shots, and while a few had a nice flight and spin, it was just loads higher than I felt comfortable with.

Just curious if I should take the driver back and get the stiff shaft, and maybe settle in the middle of the two shafts I have.

Thanks.

I would suggest a 30 minute lesson with a teaching pro and make sure your fundamentals are in order before you try to correct what may be a swing problem with hardware.

With a 90 mph clubhead speed, you should not be playing even an S flex shaft, let alone an X flex shaft, and swinging that rebar may have caused you to to many things incorrectly in an attempt to get the ball up in the air.

That 30 minutes with a qualified teaching pro may be the best money you ever spend on golf.

I appreciate it.

I'm just wondering if maybe I haven't given this shaft it's due. I can hit the ball, and my swing speed feel like I can get the club head around faster.

I just feel like I have little to no control over the head it seemed. I only hit around 30 balls with it, between the range and the course.

Appreciate the help.. Saves me a trip to the PGA store this week.

I concur with the recommendation of seeing a teaching professional to check your mechanics. But my advice to you on the significant change you made between the x flex R5 and the reg flex burner is tempo with your swing. With your swing speed you have probably been swinging at the ball pretty hard, with a agressive takeaway and attack on the ball. With the lighter shaft you will need to smooth up your takeaway so that you can still feel the clubhead during your backswing, you will need a smoother transition and attack on the ball when you swing. With your R5, I would bet you were swinging up to help get your ball launched. You will now need to focus on driving a hammer into a nail. That being your driver is the hammer and the ball the nail head. Drive your head through the ball in your swing and your launch angle should decrease. Since you are in Atlanta, if you want to drive up to Commerce I would be glad to take a look at your swing mechanics.

regular flex but a heavier shaft will bring the flight down. I am not opposed to playing a stiff flex because you might loose a little distance but it will feel more like what you are used to and keep the spin down. i have a few shafts right now and on really tight courses I go to a tipped x-flex nv85 which I dont turn left. My open course shaft is a tipped stiff grafaloy blue which is more appropriate for my swing speed.

I think your right. The more I think about it, the more I feel this was causing it.

I don't know about my mechanics, I KNOW they are out of whack from what I was swinging, as I've got a cracked rib at the moment and I was trying to swing my best(not out of my shoes) without hurting too much. I've actually never had a problem with my ball flight.. I need some spin to gain some distance, but I actually swing into the ball, almost trying to punch it when I drive.

I just feel like the shaft is like a limp noodle when I take it back, and that my club is flexing so bad when I'm at the apex of the swing causing the extremely high flight.
