Which wedges? Help!

Recommended Posts

Looking to give the high end guys a try...
I'd like to give the high end/premium wedges discussed on here a try. However, I haven't had an opportunity to see/feel any of these choices (Miura, Chikara, Scratch, Fourteen, etc.) in person. I'm sure I could easily choose one if I could see them in person, but since I can't, I'm hoping that you guys with direct experience with these clubs can help me pick the right one for me up front.

I played a 52/56/60 combination in Vokey 400 series with some success for years. In the last couple of years, I switched to a 54/58 Spin Milled combination which has worked fine. I think I would like to go for a 53/58 combination.

For the 53, I would use it almost exclusively as a full shot club, filling the gap between my full PW (which I hit 135) and my full 58 degree wedge (which I hit 110). I'm not looking for much versatility in this club, just a nice feeling full shot wedge. I am a major driver/digger. I play the ball pretty far back in my stance with these clubs, and hit down on them with huge divots.

For the 58, I'm looking for more versatility. I want to be able to open it up when I short-side myself, and I need to flop it, and I want a stable club on full swings. I also will use this club around the greens (ball in the back of my stance, hitting down on the ball with lots of spin on short chips).

I like wedges to sit square, with a straight leading edge-- I've never liked Clevelands because they always look too rounded on the leading edge, like it protrudes in front of the hosel.

Is this information helpful at all between narrowing down the list of options I listed above? Are there other options I should consider? Are there other pieces of information that would be helpful in picking the right one?

Thanks for the help!

I have two Miura wedges in my bag, one 52 and the other one 58. I use them for the same purposes you opt to, and I love them so much.

The feel is superb, the spin is awesome, which I think put you in control. They are very sharp, which I especially encountered with the 58. In shots from the sand you really need to know what you're doing.

To check out my wedges go to my WITB thread:

Good luck!

My son, who is very close to a scratch, was given the choice between a Fourteen and a Scratch SW. He tried them at the same time and chose the Scratch because the Fourteen was "hot" anywhere it was hit on the face. The Scratch could be deadened by hitting on the toe. He did keep a Fourteen gap wedge, which he prefers to chip with.

To me, the feel of the Fourteen was much better than the Scratch. Hope this helps.

Fourteen make excellent wedges, can't go wrong there.

However, for my 52/53 I would look at the new Epon 208KGX Wedge. Perfect as per you description of looks and usage.

For the 58* I would buy the Chikara 57* and have it bent to 58* This wedge will do what you are asking for.

Tourspecgolf has some good wedge deals on Ebay right now....

I gave the Chikaras a try (a 57 and a 60), and while they looked awesome, they just weren't for me. I found the feel to be very soft, and the spin was awesome. The grind was as versatile as advertised, so around the greens they worked well for me. However, on full shots, there just wasn't enough effective bounce for me. I like to pound the ball into the ground on approach shots, and these just didn't feel right doing that. I also like a "clickier" feel-- these feel really, really soft.

So, I'm listing both of these in the BST forum. I may give those Fourteen's you mention a try when they come out!

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
