Golf club length and "fit"

For a standard sized person (6'1", 170 pounds and 33" inseam and arms) how likely is it to need a 1" longer than standard shaft? I was told at Golfsmith by their head clubfitter who was also a pro that I need such a thing and he wants to put shaft butt extensions on. Is this type length thing normal or am I being fit for some stupid swing/set up flaw? He says that is not the case, but my local pro/teacher (PGA award winning pro) never has said a word about my set up being bad, in fact praises it. He only told me to go get a dynamic lie fitting. So what are some opinions here?

Second, same fitter said I need mid size grips (despite my glove being a medium or ML) due to my finger length. My fingers are not large diameter for sure. The grip size I can see maybe, but throw in some opinions here too.

Yes, I understand you cannot see my swing, but is something like this to be expected or at least "normal"? Or am I being sold something I do not need or, worse, that can hurt my swing in the long term? Despite my repeated queries to the golf fitter, he swears that the length is necessary...but it doesn't seem right to me for some reason.

You should talk about this with your teacher. He is in the best position to give you accurate advice.

 

(Since he did tell you to get a dynamic lie fitting, it would seem like he has already evaluated your situation but ask him about the fitter's suggestions for your own peace of mind.)

I would double-check with my instructor before doing it. If you are still unsure then you can solicit the opinion of another pro/instructor until you feel comfortable.
