Lateral hazard - verification required

Recommended Posts

After being a member of a new club for 6 months now, one hazard has stood out to me in that it's staked red, not yellow.

I'm yet to be pop a ball in the hazard yet, but one day I will do and wish to confirm my understanding as it is highly advantageous and I have always wondered why I've never seen anyone take relief this way. I also know I will meet huge opposition when I will do it.

Here's the hole:

Lateral hazard rules tell me I can drop within the yellow zone as I'm allowed to cross the hazard to point B, a point across the hazard equidistant from the hole to the point of entry, point A. Have I missed anything?

You are correct. I would wager that after you correctly take your drop, your group will have a talk with your club professional, and ultimately the hazard will be changed to yellow.

I don't believe you will have this problem, but I thought I'd point it out anyway. Remember that when you choose a point on the opposite margin, that a straight line going from the point where ball last crossed the margin to that point on the opposite margin must not cross dry land. If you look at Decision 26-1/14 there is a pretty picture that clarifies what is meant by opposite margin.

Yes! There's nothing really "lateral" about that hazard, although as long as it's marked as such you certainly have the opposite side option for a drop.

Ah good news - thx all. Might be another situation where I'll have to suggest an adamant opponent put his money where his mouth is.

Thx also for posting about the opposite margin crossing 'dry land' explanation jjj. Interesting, especially given that when you take relief under 26-1b ('go back as far as you want' option), you are allowed to cross 'wet land'.

Looks fine to me.

I believe the USGA used to have video animations in this regard as well....but I can't seem to find them anymore.

I don't believe this hazard meets the definition of Lateral Water Hazard.

Lateral Water Hazard

A lateral water hazard is a water hazard or that part of a water hazard so situated that it is not possible, or is deemed by the Committee to be impracticable, to drop a ball behind the water hazard in accordance with Rule 26-1b. ...

Perhaps, but the water looks like it could continue it's way around the green, or down the length of the fairway as well...it doesn't end in the picture provided.

So instead of doing the this part is red, this part is yellow, they marked it all as a lateral hazard.

To add, weather or not it meets the defintion of a lateral hazard in it's truest form does not change the fact that it's currently marked as a lateral hazard and therefore the player is given the play options of a lateral hazard.

I agree with the last paragraph 100%, and that is the way I answered the original question.

A lateral hazard gives you an option of dropping @ B....a point equidistant to where the ball entered @ A.
