Old grip tape removal

I just finished removing some old grip tape before regripping. I used hot water, naptha, acetone, knives etc. to do this but never satisfactory. What do you do that makes the job simple?

Simple? I have found that is never simple. What I have done is only remove the tape every other grip change. I take care as to not disturb the old grip tape and just put the new grip tape over the old. One layer doesnt make that much of a difference to me. On my second grip change, then I remove all of the tape.

Patience and a few beers.....seriously though I just use a new razor blade and shave the old tape off. Also I have found that if you use the 2" tape and apply it vertically it is much easier to remove the next time. Wrapping the thin stuff has proven harder and more time consuming.

depending on what the old tape is, I run the blade up the shaft, evenly spaced, then take some goo gone and go to town

 

this method, while a lil time consuming, ensures a nice clean surface for regripping

Hair dryer works good for me, then take the leftover glue off with acetone.

I use heat - I just run the torch over it real quick and heat it just enough to loosen the glue. Works great on steel shafts, but you have to be careful with graphite, obviously.

Heat on steal, if its graphite....sometimes I'll take it off, if its one of my own clubs, it usually stays there if its not for coming off. I quite often don't use tape, so my usual method is a little patch over the butt to start it, then on it goes. Same applies.

If its steel just use a razor blade.

I use a tool similar to this and I run a heat gun about 2 inches off the steel just in front of the tool. Somethimes I can get a good edge and then peal by hand. If not I heat and scrape it all and use Goof Off to clean it up. Ive been using this method on steel for years and it is actually not too bad. I used to dread the job. Now on graphite I'm more inclined to do it by hand to avoid a problem.

 

The key is to find an edge and get it pealing back with the heat gun first.

With steel shafts: Use a good sharp knife (utility knife works fine) run the knife along the shaft 3 or 4 times... (rotate shaft a little after each pass) to get smaller strips....then heat with heat gun....then peal....comes off no problem.

 

Graphite: Use the heat gun and start pealing....your thumb might get a little raw though.....

You don't need a lot of heat to do this....
