Suggestion on changing of shaft?

I used to play a R580XD with a Grafalloy blue stiff shaft and it fit me quite well. Was hitting around 220~240 carry distance. The bad news is it was broken by a silly action from me. ;)

Ever since I have been trying and buying new driver to replace it.

I was advised to use a regular shaft by the "Pro" after he see my swing and so I bought the R7 superquad 10.5 with the stock regular shaft, RE*AX 65. It was ok when I first tried it, got a little draw flight which I prefer but the ball launch a bit too high. Later it was nightmare as I was playing it with a big hook most of the time.

I go for the Callaway FT-5 tour 8.5 with a slight open face, Fuji E360 regular, thinking it will correct my big hook problem and will bring the ball lower but I was very wrong, it give me a push to the right with a fade :rolleyes:

I am very confused now and don't know what shall I do? I am thinking of changing shaft but which shall I go for? My area here do not have a launch monitor, I can only assume that my ss to be around 90~100 mph. I have a rather faster than average tampo.

IMO it would be worth the effort to get some #'s from a launch monitor with a KNOWLEDGABLE tech. If that isn't an option I'd guess with your ss you would be in the reg flex shaft. I think Grafalloy's Platnium shaft is probably the best under 100 bux shaft out there. I'd also recommend getting it at least spined. If you buy from Golfsmith for a extra 8-12 bux they will sst/PURE it for you, well worth it IMO.

 

If you don't want to spine the shaft SK Fiber is probably the best off the shelf shaft, again IMO.

 

Good luck with whatever you come up with. It can be quite an education--remember on graphite shaft company's stiff isn't the same as another company's stiff.

Just after I have posted, I have bought 3 shafts from the internet. ;) :rolleyes:

1)Aldila NVS 65 Orange Stiff,

2)Aldila NV Proto 65 Regular and

3)Grafalloy Prolaunch Red Regular.

Which do you think will suit?

I am thinking of putting the Prolaunch Red or NV Proto into my R7 to reduce the high ball flight. As for the FT-5, I don't know whether there will be anyone here in Singapore will want to take up the job. If there is, I may want to try it out with the NVS 65.

Any suggestion?

All I can do is guess so instead I'll just say that I've found the NVS I believe is a low kicking shaft and was a little to whippy for me, the NV has a active tip so is also a low kicking shaft, but I liked the feel after I got used to it. The Grafalloy Red mite be a little stiff for you, its a mid kicking shaft.

 

If there is a place near you that you can demo different shafts that will help quiet a bit. This is all personal opinion, so lets see what others mite have to add.

 

Oops, just noticed that it was the NV proto, don't know much about that one.

Maybe it's my swing problem? Or the E360 shaft on the FT-5 having problem? Or the RE*AX 65 on the R7 is too soft for me? :rolleyes:

As I have mentioned in my first post in this thread, I find that R580XD fit with a Grafalloy Blue Superlite Stiff shaft fit me quite well. At lease it don't fly the ball too high, too right or too left.

The problem is I can't manage to find back the same shaft anymore. :black eye:

I went from a Graffaloy ProLaunch Blue R to a Graffaloy Red R and can honestly say I'm very happy with it. It gives a lower trajectory resulting in more roll, just what I was looking for. I liked the Blue and the Red feels very similar. I would suggest GETTING the Graffaloy ProLaunch Red from Golfsmith ($66.99) and have it "Pured" ($12.99). It's a great shaft!

I have bought the Prolunch Red and was thinking of fitting it to my R7 Superquad. Anyone here have this combination?

What is wrong with your ball flight with your current combo? Are you ballooning your drives? I used to hit it very high with so much spin that the ball would just stop as soon as it hit the fairways. If thats what your drives are doing try the PL Red because the PL Red has a High kick point which should lower your launch and lower your spin. I currently play a Taylor Made R7 425 TP with a PL Red and I couldn't be happier. I now hit lower launching bombs that roll out alot after it hits the fairways.

Mk, you are right! My ball flow very high and will drop down like a metal ball, make a mark on the fairway and sit beside it. I think it may be due to it's loft. It has a 10.5*. I see that the stock shaft - Fujikura RE*AX 65 has a mid kick point, will changing to the PL red lower the ball fight a lot?

Have you tried tinkering with the head weights first? I mean - isn't that the quads main selling point? Could save you a few bucks too.

jas, yes I have change the heavier weight to the front, both 12g are in front but the ball still flow very high. :black eye:
