Got fitted for a ball...

...but I should have been fitted for a shaft
Well, I got fitted for a ball today and was able to increase distance by about 10 yards by switching balls to the Bridgestone e6+, but the fitter was saying it was likely that I need to a new shaft to hit my optimal data. I asked him to recommend one for me, but said he was not qualified enough to do so (Very glad he was honest about that). Can anyone recommend me a shaft based on the following data:

Current Setup: Nickent 4dx 9* Draw Driver with UST SR3 Stiff Shaft (mid launch)
Swinger: Fast Tempo
Handicap: 12 - Usually put the ball in either the fairway or first cut, but will put a few drives per round in the deep stuff or near trees
Problems: High amounts of backspin and High launch angle
Launch monitor Results: Swing Speed 115MPH; Backspin 3353RPM; Side Spin +700RPM; Launch Angle 17*; Carry Dist. 260 YDS
What I would like to change: Lower amont of backspin and Lower launch angle - was told for my Swing Speed ideal would be Launch Angle:12.5 and 2300RPM Backspin
Shot Tendancy: If I just want to put it down the fairway Ill usually hit a slight fade, but can draw the ball if it is called for.

I am looking in the neighborhood of $100 and any input would be very much appreciated! If you need more info just let me know!

Try a UST proforce V2. You can fine tune the weight, flex and torque options to suit your swing and is well within your price range. Check out the shaft forum and you'll see it's an all-time great. A Pro V1x might also help with your high flight/spin issue. Here's a good starting point:

UST Proforce V2 75
ust_proforce_v2_75.jpg

Proforce V2 75 is a mid-weight shaft for players seeking a flatter, more penetrating ball flight with superior control. For medium/fast tempo golfers with faster swing speeds looking for lower launch with lower spin. Great! What flex would you recommend based on the L/M results? I have that shaft in one of my hybrids and it is great!

Sorry for the off topic question.

Does the Nickent 4DX Draw version have an offset hosel or is it like 5 degrees closed or is it just internally heel weighted for the draw?

I believe it is both draw weighted and a few degrees closed. As per the linked article. Great driver though! I can hit it a ton!

No problem! Any other opinions on whether I should go with X flex or Stiff? I got 1 of each :black eye: Thanks to those who have replied so far I am looking at each one recommended so far and going to make a choice soon Ill be sure to let everyone I know what I go with

Your speed would lead me to believe you would need to go with the X in the V2. Try and hit both if you can. And for a ball, the e7+ should help with your trajectory (when it comes out).

I realize that this forum is rife with shaft recommendations based on various static data, but like the ball fitting, you really need to hit the shaft or it is just a guess on the shaft.

I agree and disagree - I agree, the best that can be done here is just a guess, but I don't believe you need to go the trial and error route with shaft fitting.

A competent fitter can watch your swing and recommend a shaft that is suitable for your swing, and based on their experience fitting golfers, they can probably pick one that you will most likely find acceptable in terms of feel. For example, players with an aggressive backswing to downswing transition move often do best with butt stiff shafts and players with a late release often have best results with a tip stiff shaft - the flex recommendation for whichever shaft you wind up in has alot to do with your transition, tempo, release and then swingspeed.

I also agree that the recommendations above are pretty good, but your best option, if you're really trying to go from a 17* launch angle to 12.5* is to get a new driver. Changing the loft of the clubhead is the most effective way to change launch angle. I think typically the shaft only contributes up to 2* or so to launch angle, so to go down 4.5*, you'll need to drop the loft of the club or make a swing change (which I don't think is what you're looking to do)

if the shaft in your current driver was a high launching noodle, and you were looking to move to something like rebar you might have a chance, but your best bet would be to go see a competent clubfitter and get yourself into a lower lofted driver (possibly even the same model if you like it) with a shaft that is appropriately suited to your swing.

good luck

RickinMA,

I really like serious fittings as they produce the best results.

Trial and error? I guess it's ok, especially if that's all you have.

The whole idea of release, transition, tempo, etc., as shaft matching tools is quite odd and not capable of producing reproducible results. This information is promoted for fitters who do not choose to invest in proper fitting materials.

I like your conclusion- find a competent fitter.

Accuflex Creations can be had for under $100. S flex would probably be enough shaft depending on your transition in your swing.

After doing a ton of research on shafts... I was thinking either going with the Accuflex Creation or the Evolution. If I go with the Creation it will be the 65g in Stiff to keep the swing weight the same as my current set up and if I go for the evolution it will be the Evolution lite in X flex at 62g. Any guys who have used these shafts have any opions on them? I am leaning towards the creation right now, because of the lower ball flight.

I am a devoted fan of the Evolution Lite shaft. I am not the beast you are -- I have 102-105 swing speed -- and I play the S. In fact, just yesterday, I played my first round with the EVO Lite all year. I bought an 10.5 Adams XTD Pro early in the year and although I was hitting it plenty far I just never got a warm, fuzzy feeling for the YSQ. I eventually got tired of fighting the big "power fade". And then a couple nights ago, I woke up in the middle of the night and the thought occurred to me to take the EVO Lite out of my "old" driver -- an R7 425 that I played for 3 years (that's like 80 in driver years) -- and try it in the XTD.

All I can say is that I played 18 yesterday with the XTD/EVO Lite combo and it was a life changing experience. Dead straight. My "power fades" turned into bombs. High, white and handsome. I am not one to say this shaft or the other is the "best". It's all about what matches up to your swing. But the EVO Lite matches up to mine better than anything I've tried in the past 3 years. And I've tried quite a few. It's a solid shaft and it is pretty affordable. I don't think you will be dissapointed with it.
