Driver shaft flex...

A little background about me:

I started the season with about a 30 handicap. Shooting in the low 100's. I've been hitting the range and course almost every week this season and now i consistently shoot in the mid 80's. My swing speed is ~110-115. The first driver i bought was a nike sq tour 9.5 with a pro-launch blue stiff shaft. This season i bought a cobra l4v x9.0 with the stock diamana redboard x-stiff shaft.

Now, on average i'd say this is a pretty straight and long club for me. I do have on and off days where i drive all over the place. so here is my issue...

I tried my friends speed LD F 10.5 reg flex last nite at the range. i hit almost every ball dead straight and carried it about 280. should i consider going back to a regflex shaft even though everything tells me to use nothing less than a stiff? anyone else experience something like this before? i know that with a fast swing like mine, the ball dispersion should be much wider with a softer shaft...but this is almost the opposite for me!

I would try your friends club on the course first, if he's willing. Range balls go much lower so I would make sure you dont balloon the regular shaft with proper balls. If you dont, maybe you just have a very smooth tempo.

If it's just a stock Cobra shaft, it may very well frequency out to a stiff flex. Most mfg. stock shafts have pretty lax quality control standards. You might have just gotten lucky and found a shaft profile that fits your swing. Another stock Cobra club with the "same" might be completely wrong for you.

Could be that all three shafts are just stiff flex. There is no industry standard flex rating so one manufacturers "regular" flex could be the other ones "stiff". The is no way one can presume shafts with the same flex rating perform with the same properties - it just a general starting point. The head weights are also probably different and so too are the kickpoints and torque of each shaft! So in short, you're probably not as crazy as you think!

The pro launch and red are softer tip / high launch shafts.

Could be that the shaft in your freinds LD F has a stiffer tip profile and that may work better with your swing.

well i can def feel the flex difference between the shafts when i hold it in my hand, wiggle the club and when i swing. the cobra LD shaft is the stock aldila nv shaft that i've seen from those clubs...i can feel that my pro launch blue shaft is stiffer and the diamana red on the l4v is even stiffer.

 

i'll prob play a round with him and use his driver a few times on the course to test it as well. the speed LD launched higher than my l4v but its prob due to the angle diff 9.0 vs 10.5
