reusing ferrules

can it be done? im talking about taking them off a set of old shafts and putting them on new shafts when i reshaft a set of irons. if it is possible, how can you remove them from the old shafts without damaging them?

It can be pretty tricky. It can be down but for the cost, just get some new ones, it is much easier.

Depending upon how they were put on at the time of installation it can range between 'no chance' to 'dead easy' to save ferrules.

Generally, once you've got the shafts out a good tug will dislodge them or, if they're a bit stubborn, heating them up a little with some steam from the kettle or running them under warm/hot water will usually do the trick.

Once you get them off borrow some nail varnish remover from the wife/daughter/aging glamrocker who lives next door and use a small amount on a cloth to shine them up after you've installed them.

When heating the heads to take them off, you can protect the ferrules with a wet paper towel wrapped around them.

Maltby's Golf Works sells a spray formula that coats the ferrule so that they do not melt when heating the head for removal. Also, what I have found that works on older models is to cut a strip off an old grip and wrap it around the ferrule three or four times. You can then get a good grip on it and twist the ferrule up the shaft an inch or so away from the head. That way when you heat the head for removal, very little heat will contact the ferrule. Like a previous member posted, you can then wrap the ferrule with a wet paper towel to further protect the ferrule from heat damage. Once the head is removed you can then use the old grip trick to twist the ferrule off of the shaft after the shaft has cooled down. I collect alot of the old blades from years gone by and this is how I do it. It has worked for me just about every time. GOOD-LUCK !!!
