Combo set, a good idea?

695 CB and 695 MB
I have the oppertunity to get either set for a very good price, but i also have the oppertunity to get teh CBs 3-7 and then 8-pw the MBs. The lofts are 2* differnt, so i would have to bend the MBs 2* down to make em match. Is this a good idea to try because i love having solid cavity backs as my mid iron (why make the game harder) but i need that control with blades. Hitting short iron cavitys dont feel as good as a blade short iron for me. Maybe i can get used to it but i would prefer the MB short irons. Is this a good idea to do or is kind of reaching out for nothing.

Thanks
Kevin

I'm pretty sure that I've seen this in some bags in the tour pics threads... Probably a good move.

This will make for a nice set, but watch out when you bend the mb's because you will be reducing the bounce angles as well. the Mb's may have less bounce to begin with and bending them 28 strong may decrease bounce to wear they become real diggers.

Some more food for thought, the stronger lofts on the CB's maybe to control the launch angle do to perimeter weighting design. You may only have to decrease the lofts 1* in the MB's and increase 1* in the cb's

Why when the 735.CMs already exist?? In spite of all that has been written about the 695.MB and 695.CB they still have a different top line thickness, wider sole, and slightly different looking offset in the set between the CB and MB. If you can get Titleist to grind that out to avoid a very noticeable transition look I guess they would be a good idea. But since the CBs I have had felt very hard at impact and the MBs felt a little better I guess I would choose the 735s. I gave my set of MBs, CBs, 660s back to the rep. to use for demos and kept my 735s. The only objection to the 660s were they were satin chrome which I don't like in a traditional forging.

Since the 690•CB and MB were matched in lofts, I wonder if Titleist feels the stronger loft is necessary (as goddo suggests). I'd take some time to hit them all before doing any bending. I have played the 690•CB since they came out, and they do hit the ball very high, especially in the short irons (for me, anyway). I hope that's the reason, I don't see any other reason to put game-improvement lofts in a player's forged CB...

From the looks in photos, the transition will be a little drastic. Have you thought about the 735s? I don't find the 3 iron as forgiving as my 690•CB, but the mid and short irons are great.

Goddo is right. These clubs were not made to be a split set. The CB's are designed for high ball flight / high spin players to help control trajectory. Second Titleist will not do any custom grinding to these clubs because well they don't do that and because they will not sell them as a split set. :D This is why they created the 735's. Any "split" set you have seen on the tour were CUSTOM built for that player. It's not a hodge podge of oem components.

I have a mixed set of 690 CB's and MB's (see my signature) and I love them. The thicker topline on the long irons is really the only noticable difference and having that CB is nice for your misshits, but they still have that nice, solid forged feel. :D

Also, a certified Titleist dealer suggested this mixed set. I think that your bounce issues really matter on where you're playing the majority of your golf. Up here in soggy Seattle we have to play with a different bag than you lucky bastards in CA and AZ. :D

They weren't intended to be a combo set (as stated by some above). Two different sets to meet the needs of two different players. Different ballflights (significant), different bounce angles and different sole width and grinds.

Trust me- it'll be a headache to set up. Bending the lofts in the standard way will not yield the yardage gaps that you'll want.

i think if you go combo that you should consider only doing 3-5 in CB and 6-P in MB, i personally only use the 690.CB 3i but i may get a 4i as well, just to help out in tight situations where i need a bit more forgiveness...just a thought though, but as stated about, do watch out for those bounce angles

The lofts are different because the clubheads are different. A muscle back iron usually has a higher center of gravity that will produce a lower ball flight, so the lofts need to be weaker to produce optimum trajectory. With the cavity back irons, it's just the opposite.

I play a combo set of Hogan Edge Pro 3 - 5 iron (=CB) and Apex blade 6 iron - PW (=MB), the lofts of the the CB's are also app. 2 deg stronger. The yardage gap between my 5 and 6 iron is app similar to the other gaps.

My suggestion is to try out the mixed set, then fine tune the lofts (if necessary) to cover any yardage gaps.
