Assuming you have the lies set to suit you, they're probably won't be an issue if you can control them.

One of the rules of thumb is that any length can be fit to a player, aslong as the lie is correct. Height/wrist to floor measurement isn't so important when it comes to fitting length, its about what length best suits/helps the player hit the ball out of the center of the club, consistently.

Jack Nicklaus says that a shorter person realizes more distance benefit from longer clubs than does the taller player. The theory is that a taller golfer can generate a a wide arc as a function of their longer arms and doesn't need the added shaft length.

The shorter golfer needs the equipment to be longer to get that bigger arc.

Disagree? Talk to Jack ;)

Heck, if you think they feel too long, choke down on them like Anthony Kim. He has his clubs lengthened by 1/2" so he can choke down them.

I agree as long as the lie angle is correct, I don't see a problem with the 1/2". My clubs are 1/2" over standard and I am relatively short. My static measurements recommend a standard length, but I play longer clubs. I have somewhat of an upright stance and the add club length gives me an additional 5 yards per club.

I am about 5'11" and may be purchasing a set of mp 30's +1/2" over standard. Will I need to pay to have these cut down to standard or will these be ok?

As always a great site and thanks for all the help.

It is OK, If you think you pull iron shot, you can adjust the lie of irons. You don't need to change shaft length. If you change shaft length, you have to adjust swing weight also by lead tape. I don't recommend this.

. . . except you don't know if swingweight was adjusted for the +1/2" in the first place. The 1/2" in length would increase SW by 3 pts. So to OP you may want to inquire about swingweight of clubs before purchasing.

If you need to worry about swing weight with irons that are +1/2, then you must be really good... or really bad.

Don't worry about swing weight with .5 inch. It only becomes a noticeable value when you are dealing with inches.

If all your irons swing weights match, which they will, and you can feel the clubhead at the end of the shaft throughout your swing, go enjoy the game.

Worry less.

Sorry but I have to disagree. Most of the stuff I have read online says that at 3 swingweight points you will start to notice a difference. Also, a players sensitivity to swingweight has little to do with their skill level. If you think you notice a difference than you probably do, if you dont than dont worry about it. I am 6'4" and have my irons 1/2in long and put lead tape under the grip to balance out the swingweight.

I would disagree with the sw notion also. 3 sw's is a pretty noticeable issue. I don't think you have to be that good to have it make a difference.

You might luck out like I did when buying clubs I was shortening. The guy must have loved heavy weights as they sw'd at D6 b4 cutting down 1/2". I was wanting D3 to start with. I only had to lead them to fine tune instead of tip weighting them.

I don't buy it. Go play the game. You're swinging a heavy head at the end of a metal tube. It isn't going to add 5 points to your handicap. Guys were shooting 60's with hickory shafts and club heads of randomly manufactured weights long before we picked up a club.

People are messing with lead tape, toe grinds, hosel trimming, spining the shafts, and all this voodoo.

I believe that properly fitting an individual can help, but when someone says that the mfg spine of a shaft is important so they need to monkey with it, I unsubscribe.

Think less about what can be wrong with your gear that's causing you to play poorly. There are junior golfers on the junior tours that are shooting even par with their dads clubs. Go have fun.

He's already 'subscribed' (as you put it) to the thought that equipment does make a difference. He asked a question we're trying to help him with. If it's in you're head, then why not take every advantage available to you to at least take your equipment out of the equation when playing. The last thing on my mind is my club doesn't look or feel right. I'm very anal about my specs. One less swing thought I need. All this voodoo you talk about matters to some people. Even some high handicappers.

Especially high handicappers. It isn't your gear.

But if it soothes you, then go ahead.

Then I suppose you have no special reason for playing the equipment you do. Sounds pretty hypocritical to me, but whatever- tell yourself whatever you need to.

And by the way, I'm a single digit h/c and DO believe my equipment has something to do with it!

Nope, off the rack - works great... No hypocrisy here, I didn't spine my shaft and tweak my swing weigh and add lead tape. Get proper length and let it be.

I'm not going to argue any more. I just see many people over thinking their equipment and not playing the game. It gets so micro-managed that people begin to believe that their poor round was due to improper swing weight. It isn't. It's your fast tempo, over the top casting swing in most cases, not the spine of the shaft.

This has morphed into a discussion that has nothing to do with the original post so I'll let it die.
