Pasture Golf

At the back of the Shackleford book (yes, mine finally came in) there is a list of websites that those of us who are interested in the future of golf - one more sustainable and accessible - would find interesting. One in particular is a real hoot and worthy of discussion:

I have a suspicion that more than one of us who are "senior statepeople" on this site may have been a part of the counter-culture in our much younger days, did a little backpacking, did a little or a lot of a lot of things back in the day. If this site doesn't stir your imagination, I'll be very surprised. I somehow think that the ghosts of Jerry Garcia, Hunter Thompson, etc would found on one of there courses - provided they have found the true path to inner peace and self discovery - golf.

This is how I learned to play. In the cow pasture every day after school. I miss pasture golf.

I have a driving range set up in one of our pastures, although it's a horse pasture and not a cow pasture. It's a bit of a pain to pick the balls up so I set up a net and mostly use the "range" for checking trajectory and distance mixed with hitting into the net.

Most of the listed courses at that website are in Central Oregon. I think I am going to take a field trip out there this summer. Why pay the big money in Sun River when you can stop along the way and play on real dirt with real folks whose callouses are not entirely from golf? Might even meet a Tin Cup or two.

I'm going to pay a pilgramage to Bandon this summer. It would be great to stop along the way.

 

BTW It may well be an urban legend but I have heard rumors about something called the Sheep Pasture at Bandon. Supposed to be a very very private course just North of the complex that is actually a pasture course built for the owner and his invited guests. Supposed to be a replica (at least as Kidd) saw it of what golf must have been like in Scotland when it was being invented. Have you or anyone else heard anything about it?

I cannot remember the name of the course - but my father was telling me that on a trip he took to scotland or ireland - cant recall - where they played all great courses - one course had cows grazing on the sides and a small electrified wire around each green to keep them out
